2008 in three lines or less

Drop it like it's hot

I've been looking back so much recently that I should install a rear-view mirror on this blog. But it's hard to do much else once late December rolls around. Click here to read the YDR's three lines project, which summarizes the top stories of the year.

The Veronicas: So hot right now

This Australian sister act (23-year-old twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso) has a lot of attitude, and I can't get their catchy anthem "Untouched" out of my head. They might just break out in 2009. It would be cooler if the pair did more than stand at the mic wearing heavy eyeliner (i.e. played instruments), but I think this is the perfect pre-New Year's video. Enjoy.

Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and actress/She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel are engaged. They had been dating for a year. I guess they kept that under wraps until now. I wonder if Zooey was at Death Cab's Radio City show... Anyway, here's hoping they make some sweet music together.

What's with all the lists?

VH1 tried to pick the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs." The two-hour spectacular, which airs at 9 Tuesday night, will no doubt feature video clips and commentary from pop culture icons. I always wonder who has the authority to rank the songs. Some artist always ends up getting snubbed.

It's not just Best of 2008 lists. It seems like more networks, magazines and Web sites are using the list method to capture readers/viewers. Can anyone say overkill? Who really cares what the top 25 "I did it for the money" films are? The only lists that matter to me are the lists of Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award winners. Word.

Snap, crackle, pop: It's Yule Log time!

I headed back East Friday and found my parents' house packed with people and food. Saturday and Sunday were spent visiting with relatives and eating as well. I don't even want to think about how many cookies I ingested in the last 72 hours. It makes want to hit the tredmill hard.

Tina Fey: Entertainer of the Year

The Associated Press has spoken. It picked funny lady Tina Fey as the top entertainer of 2008. Fey won three Emmy's for her NBC sitcom "30 Rock." Her movie "Baby Mama" grossed $60 million. But her most memorable roles were her "Saturday Night Live" impersonations of Gov. Sarah Palin. Watch her in action below. For more Palin parody, click here.

Season's greetings FlipSiders. You can call me old-fashioned because that's my thing right now, at least as far as cinema's concerned. Thursday night, I watched the copy of "The Maltese Falcon" that I kidnapped borrowed from my father. It was pretty sweet, but what movie with Humphrey Bogart isn't?

Trailer wars: Rom-com rumble

Cat fights!
"Bride Wars" stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Husdon as best friends who book their weddings on the same day at the same venue. Sabotage via fake tanner and hair dye ensues. It hits theaters Jan. 9.

"He's Just Not That Into You" is based on the best-selling book that tried to help desperate/needy women deal with unrequited love. This sap fest and its stellar ensemble cast premieres Feb. 6.

'Flight of the Conchords' premieres online

The HBO comedy series "Flight of the Conchords" aired its season two premiere on Funny or Die's website. The episode doesn't air on HBO.com until Dec. 22 and HBO until Jan. 18. Check it out. (I guess it's a little late in the game for a spoiler alert.)

Sleepwalking with Mike Birbiglia in NYC

In an awesome display of birthday gift-giving saavy, my husband bought us tickets to see a performance of "Sleepwalk With Me", a one-man show by my favorite comedian Mike Birbiglia.
So it was with much excitement that we headed to the Bleeker Street Theatre in New York City on Sunday afternoon to see Birbiglia in person.

Here he is on "Conan O'Brien".

In: Frank and April / Out: Jack and Rose
leo.jpegtitanic_02.jpeg
A lot of people seem to be focused on the Kate (Winslet) and Leo (DiCaprio) reunion coming to the big screen soon. I recently read a painful Q & A in Entertainment Weekly. It focused too much on "Titanic" nostalgia and not enough on the poignant and less cheesy "Revolutionary Road," which could earn several Oscar nods. I loved "Titanic" as much as the next sap. Heck, I even wrote notes about how hot Leo was to my BFF in seventh grade. But it's time to let Jack and Rose rest in peace.

I kicked off a festive weekend Friday at happy hour at the Harp & Fiddle. I chatted people up about who they'd like to kiss under the mistletoe. Here are my top three picks:

Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer make up

| | Comments (0)

Egos were bruised after Tom Cruise chewed out Matt Lauer three years ago. But they rekindled their bromance Monday on "The Today Show." See if you can figure out what's up with Cruise's neck and count how many times he almost falls off his stool. At least he toned down the Scientology talk. Is he not nuts anymore?

Hugh Jackman to host Oscars

jackman.jpeg

You like?

"Sexiest Man Alive" Hugh Jackman will host the 81st Annual Academy Awards.

Can anyone else say boring? Where did the Academy's sense of humor go? Jon Stewart hosted the 2008 Oscars and Ellen DeGeneres hosted them in 2007.

If they were going to choose a non-comedian who wasn't nominated, they should have gone with Justin Timberlake. Can Jackman's Aussie accent keep the award show's ratings from going down under again this year?

The Academy Awards air Feb. 22 on ABC.

Chilly good fun

| | Comments (0)

Sunday evening, I met friends at the Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg to see a live performance of Winter Radio Theater. The show was fun. The great singing and clever lines had me smiling the whole way through.

The atmosphere, however, left much to be desired.

The show was held in the second floor gallery room, and I don't know if they were having problems with the heat in there or if it's always that cold, but nearly everyone in the crowd of more than a dozen (by the way, I'm surprised they didn't have a bigger audience -- has word not gotten out how good they are?) was bundled in winter coats, hats, gloves and still shivering.

I was so cold that I considered leaving early, but I stuck it out. At times, the music from the band performing for a live party in the next room covered some of the lines.

They'll perform the show again this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at ABC, 50 N. Cameron St. Admission is $5, plus donation of one non-perishable food item. If I were you, I'd bring an extra scarf, too.

Just in case.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe nominees were announced Thursday morning.
"Frost/Nixon," "Doubt" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" each got five nods. It's strange that all three movies haven't come to the area yet and they're already receiving awards.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Frank Langella, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Mickey Rourke got acting noms. Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and Kristin Scott Thomas were recognized in the actress category. As exptected, Heath Ledger got a supporting actor nom.

The Jonas Brothers lead a list of top celebrity fundraisers compiled by Charity Folks, an organization that operates online auctions with entertainers to raise money for nonprofit causes.

Charity Folks says the pop trio, Kevin, Joe and Nick, garnered $450,000 for their charity, the Change for the Children Foundation, with an auction that sold VIP tickets to concerts and chances to meet the band.

Second place went to Billy Joel, who raised $400,000, and Bruce Springsteen took third with $300,000.

Hardwicke takes a walk

There's already trouble brewing for the "Twilight" sequel.

Catherine Hardwicke, the woman who brought the teen vampire saga to the big screen, is not going to be back for the sequel flick "New Moon."

The details of the decision are complicated, but click here for a breakdown and click here for analysis of what this news could mean for "New Moon."

"Twilight" grossed $35.7 million it's first Friday in theaters. Summit Entertainment might be kicking itself if "New Moon" doesn't make as good a showing sans Hardwicke.

Bad news at NBC

Jay Leno is moving from late night to a 10 p.m. time slot.

The program is supposed look a lot like "The Tonight Show," which Leno's hosted since 1993.

NBC sure is struggling. Chief exec. Jeff Zucker is considering cutting the number of programming hours at the station.

Last week, the company cut 500 workers. Ouch.

Fedoras optional but recommended
fedora_felt_hat.jpeg
The smooth sounds of Tim Warfield got me ready for the weekend Thursday night at White Rose. I was happy to hear some holiday tunes in the setlist. I was also thrilled that the bar put in more booths since the last time I was there. I'm a fan of the high-backed, red velvet-lined seating. It makes for a cozy place to sip a cocktail while wearing a black fedora (or so I've heard).

CELEB RUMBLES EDITION

1. Kanye vs. Colbert

Comedian Stephen Colbert is hoping to dethrone Kanye West's new album "808s and Heartbreak" to make room at the top for his "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!," which is currently stuck at No. 16. He told Colbert Nation to log on to iTunes and download the album for Operation Humble Kanye. I don't think it's working. West twittered back with: "who the (expletive) is Stephen Colbert?"
