"Wrestler" worth all the hype

I've been hankering to see a movie for the past few weeks and finally went out on Saturday night --- not to see "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" (as my husband, and apparantly everyone else in the country wanted to see).
We compromised on "The Wrestler," which I was interested in after hearing about Mickey Rourks' award-winning performance, and my husband was interested in for the chance to relive the hours and hours he spent watching the "sport" in his formative years.
We were both pleased with the choice.

Rourke, who won a Golden Globe for his performance and was nominated for an Oscar, deserves the accolades. He disappears into the role of an aging wrestler forced to come to terms with his mortality and his broken past.
After a particurally gruesome match involving a staple gun and several feet of barbed wire, Randy "The Ram" Robinson suffers a heart attack, and finds himself alone -- despite all the fans he's amassed over the years. He seeks solace in run-down stripper (Marisa Tomei, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for the role), who suggests he reconnect with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood).
The reunion is rocky, but Randy, who's a charming guy, manages to mend some wounds.
But he never quite fits in with the world outside the ring. You'll laugh at scenes where this huge, brawny guy heads to his local beauty parlor to get his roots touched up before heading to the tanning salon to be bronzed. And your heart will go out to him as he tries haplessly to find common ground with his daughter, who still bears the scars of his past snubs.
In the end, the conflict for Randy isn't making ends meet like any other down-on-his-luck character. He's forced to make the choice between living a normal life in a world that's moved on, or risking his life by following his passion and heading back into in the ring.

YES YES YES! Agree wholeheartedly. This movie was so great. It's hard to put into words. I just "got it." Mickey Rourke was amazing and if he doesn't win the Oscar, I'll tear my hair out. This movie really is worth they hype, and so is Mickey Rourke. Thanks for posting this, Sue!
