With four people in line behind me at the grocery store's Red Box movie rental kiosk this evening, I felt pressured to make my selection quickly.
Problem was, I had no idea what to get. So, I grabbed the first thing that looked good and crossed my fingers.
Turns out, "The Visitor" was worth more than the $1.06 I paid for it. Although a bit slow to get started, the film tells the engrossing tale of a widower who comes home to his NYC apartment to find it has been sublet to a young couple during his absence. When he learns they have nowhere else to go, he lets them stay, and they become friends.
The guy of the couple plays African drums and the widower -- who is a straight-laced professor type -- starts learning, eventually playing alongside the young man.
On their way back from a drum circle, the young man gets arrested without reason and detained. Turns out he was brought to the U.S. illegally when he was younger. Thus begins a long saga of lawyers, love and, eventually, deportation.
It left me thinking hard about our country's random and often illogical approach to immigration and anti-terrorism work. If you can get past the slow start, I'd wholly recommend this film.
