Must-see summer TV

| | Comments (0)

I've just finished the complete series of the "The West Wing" on DVD. I should try to get back into a current series. I don't get HBO, so that eliminates the buzzed about "Tru Blood" and "Entourage" (at least until I visit the 'rents and their On Demand). "Mad Men" doesn't start up until August and I'm over "Project Runway" on Lifetime.
So what's left?

I recently saw an ad for a new NBC series "The Philanthropist." It actually looked OK. The eight-part drama follows billionaire playboy-turned-vigilante philanthropist Teddy Rist,(James Purefoy) as he travels across the globe. Neve Campbell, Lindy Booth and Michael Kenneth Williams also star. It airs 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

I found other options here. But I'm also desperate for open to suggestions!

First look: 'Alice in Wonderland'

Tim Burton directs the "Alice in Wonderland" remake, which is scheduled to hit theaters March 5, 2010. The cast list is no surprise: Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter play the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway plays the White Queen and Aussie newcomer Mia Wasikowska plays Alice. Hungry for crabs? Go to Geezers

| | Comments (0)

My husband and I stumbled upon a new "old" place for old-fashioned steamed crabs covered in Old Bay seasoning.

Geezers restaurant in the basement of Grey Beards antique shop. And let me tell you as a (gasp) former Baltimoron -- these crabs hit the spot! The owners also hail from Maryland, so they know the ropes of picking the perfect buggers, steaming and seasoning them.

They are open on the weekends, where you can eat-in (BYOB) or take-out. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Call 428-9316.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

jackson.jpeg
The King of Pop died Thursday afternoon after being rushed to the hospital by paramedics. He was 50. From the L.A. Times:

Updated at 3:15 p.m.: Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times.

Updated at 2:46 p.m.: Jackson is in a coma and family have are arriving at his bedside, a law enforcement source told The Times.

He was born Aug. 29, 1958, the seventh child of the Jackson family. He hit the stage at 11 and started his solo career in 1971. He's one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He won 13 Grammy Awards, had 13 number one singles in his solo career and sold more than 750 million albums worldwide. He raised millions of dollars for charity, but in the early 90s he came under controversy when child abuse allegations surfaced. Recently, Jackson plotted a comeback he was scheduled to to perform 50 sell out concerts to over one million people, at London's O2 arena. Watch his videos here.

Michael Jackson hospitalized

| | Comments (0)

According to a Los Angeles Times blog, King of Pop Michael Jackson was rushed to a hospital this afternoon.

Paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The parademics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center.

Some sources are reporting he had a heart attack. Stay tuned for an update. I guess the comeback is in jeopardy.

R.I.P. Farrah Fawcett

| | Comments (0)

fawcett.jpeg Actress Farrah Fawcett died Thursday after a three-year battle with anal cancer. She was 62.

She was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas and married ABC's "The Six Million Dollar Man" star Lee Majors in 1973. They later divorced. Her famous feathered haircut, red swimsuit clad poster and TV show "Charlie's Angles" made her a star in the late '70s. She earned three Emmy nominations for the 1984 TV movie "The Burning Bed."

She spent 17 years with actor Ryan O'Neal. They had a son, Redmon, who battled drug addiction. O'Neal said Fawcett recently said yes to his latest marriage proposal. Fawcett documented her illness in with a video diary called "Farrah's Story," which aired on NBC in mid-May. (Photo: AP)

Jeff Koons and Iran

| | Comments (0)

Bob Edwards was talking to the curators of an art exhibit by several Iranian or Iran-born artists this morning on his satellite radio show when he asked the curators to describe a few of the artists.

One of them, a curator said, is "the Jeff Koons of Iran." His art is explicit, the curator explained.

"Politically explicit or otherwise?" Edwards asked.

"Otherwise," the curator said.

Thus was Koons, a York County native who is a darling of the art world and is known for some sexually-themed art, linked with artistic expression by Iranians whose work is taking on new context given the political upheaval in their country.

The exhibit is "Iran Inside Out" and info (including pictures of the some of the art) is on the Chelsea Art Museum's web site. I didn't catch which artist they compared to Koons; you can scroll through the pics to try to see for yourself, or check Edwards' web site for times that the show will be re-run.

Big changes for 2010 best picture race

| | Comments (0)

oscar.jpeg I almost hit the ceiling when I read this news.

According to Variety, Film Academy president Sid Ganis announced this morning that there will be 10 best picture nominees at the 82nd Oscar ceremony March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Oscar noms will be released Feb. 2, 2010.

For realz? I like the current cutthroat style. Why does the Academy suddenly feel the need to kick it old school? Does that mean that some "not that great" movies will make the cut? Won't the Oscars ceremony be even longer? Will Nate Silver's predictions be more wrong next year? I need an explanation. I need...to breath. Where's my paper bag?

Wolf shirts: So hot right now

Ditch those maxi dresses and madras shorts. The wolf T-shirt could be the must-have ironic fashion item of the summer. (Kind of gives "Wolf Like Me" a whole new meaning.) Click here to see what might have started this trend. Here's more random wolf stuff.

Wolf mania is spreading. Check out the "New Moon" movie poster and this Zach Galifianakis quote from "The Hangover:"

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!

Trailer wars: Relive the '80s

| | Comments (0)

It's been almost 25 years since "Ghostbusters" hit the big screen.

Check out the new video game. Will there be another movie made and, more importantly, will it be any good?

At least they used the sweet theme song by Ray Parker Jr. for the video game. Classic.
"G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" is scheduled to be released Aug. 7. It's been 45 years since the action figures hit shelves.

I admit, I was more into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than G.I. Joe, but this movie just looks cheesy. There are a lot of rumors swirling around the movie, too. (That's never a good sign.)

Would you buy beer at Sheetz?

| | Comments (5)

sheetz.jpeg
According to this YDR article, an Altoona Sheetz is encouraging state legislators to change the law prohibiting the sale of beer in convenience and grocery stores.

The store had the same type of license as a restaurant and sold six-packs to customers at a separate section of the store. But the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that it violated the state's liquor code. Other convenience and grocery stores around the state including Rutter's have been looking for ways to sell beer. But some say it could hurt distributors and lead to more underage drinking.

When I lived in Virginia, it was convenient to pick up beer at grocery stores and gas stations when I was stocking up on food and snacks. Pennsylvania's one of the only states to still have a three-tiered system for selling beer. Maybe it's time for a change? Maybe not? What do you think?

Local radio host checks in after CMA Fest

| | Comments (0)

cma.jpeg Just got an e-mail from Hanover radio personality Tim Michaels. He just got back from the CMA Fest in Nashville, Tenn. Here's what he had to say:

Festival was great! Weather was about as perfect as could be expected for middle Tennessee at this time of year , only 1 rainstorm Thursday evening. I was able to attend an anniversary celebration honoring Alan Jackson for his 20th year in the music business Wed. evening. Sunday nights show lasted til after midnight Taylor Swift, and Kenny Chesney were both on the final show of the festival at the Stadium. I was able to ad about 30 more interviews to my collection through the week. It was a busy week but very enjoyable.

Sounded awesome. Click here to read Jess Krout's post about the Jackson concert and his York Fair shows. Click here to read an interview with Michaels.

First look: YLT's 2009-10 season

| | Comments (0)

York Little Theatre announced its 2009-10 season:
Here are some highlights:
"12 Angry Jurors" runs Jan. 15 to 24. The intense, one-set production is about a 12-man jury who deliberates the guilt or innocence of a defendant. It was adapted into the 1957 movie "12 Angry Men."

"Hairspray" hits the Mainstage July 9 to 25. The local version probably won't star Zac Efron and John Travolta in drag, but I still can't wait to hear York's Tracy Turnblad sing "Good Morning Baltimore."

YLT hosts its first Junior Drama Competition Aug.13 to 22. There will be an adjudicated show of original short scenes and one-act plays written by local youth.

I heard this clip on the radio the other day on my way to work. It was one of those dreary days where you just want to stay snuggled under the covers and sleep in.

Trust me, I am so glad I ventured to work this day, if only to hear this hilarious exchange.

David Byrne's live EP recorded in York

David Byrne released his live EP "Everything That Happens Will Happen on This Tour" Monday. Here's why it's sweet:

1. It was recorded during Byrne's Dec. 4 show at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York.

2. Proceeds from sales go to Amnesty International

3. It comes with a file of pictures and hand-written lyrics by Byrne. Apparently, he likes graph paper and white tutus. Who knew?

Dirty Projectors: So hot right now

| | Comments (0)

Meet the Brooklyn art-rock band of the moment: Dirty Projectors. Their album "Bitte Orca" dropped June 9.

Their "experimental" sound was praised by Pitchfork, NPR and Entertainment Weekly. So, you should dig it, too. At least until next Tuesday when another indie act steals the buzz. Or, you can be like me and rant about interchangeable male/female lead singers. (Get over the phobia of anything conventional and pick a voice, please.)

Before I get zapped by the music gods, let me drop the tour details: Dirty Projectors hit the road with TV on the Radio, and perform Friday at Bonnaroo. Their headlining tour starts June 17 in Philadelphia.

Alan Jackson.JPGAlan Jackson has remembered when, taken some advice from Jimmy Buffet (it's five o'clock somewhere), spent time way down yonder on the Chatahoochee and taught his daughters how to drive.

To celebrate 20 years ago when he signed a deal with Arista Records, Jackson's performing a free show Wednesday at Nashville's Cadillac Ranch.

It's unusual, not only because it's a free thank you to his fans, but also because he's spent the last couple of shows at large arenas and stadiums (Hershey, for instance, in 2001). To play at a smaller venue, well, he has done it before... Continue reading about his performances at the York Fair.

Live Nation 'no service fee:' savings or scam?

| | Comments (0)

nation.jpeg After jacking up ridiculous and unexplained service fees Live Nation threw summer concert-goers a bone by offering "No Service Fee Wednesday" (or so it seemed).

On the first day of the promotion (June 3) more than 5 million lawn tickets were offered without service charges. However, fans still had to pay a $6 parking fee and in some cases facility and charity fees.

Live Nation runs its "No Service Fee Wednesday" again June 10. This time, fans can buy any ticket for any Live Nation amphitheater free of service charges. But parking, various venue fees and taxes may still apply. The offer is only valid at Live Nation venues, including Hersheypark Stadium. I wonder how much that actually saves?

The Scoop: Street rods

The FlipSide ladies cruise the hot rods at the Holiday Inn in West Manchester Township.

First look: Official 'Kids' video

| | Comments (0)

MGMT's been gone for a minute, but it just released the official video for its indie dance hit "Kids." From the Mark Twain quote to the monsters to the band's Reynolds Wrap getups to the crazy cartoons this one's a creeper. (Hmm...I wonder what else they've been doing at that "undisclosed tropical paradise.") I prefer this unofficial vid or this live one (that I've linked to, like, 20 other times).

'Emotionalism' minus the emo

| | Comments (0)

emotionalism.jpegHave no fear. There is nary a smudge of guy liner or tight pant to be found on the the Avett Brothers , despite the title of their 2007 album, "Emotionalism."
After having this song stuck in my head for a week, I stopped by the North Carolina band's Web site in search of more tasty tunage.
While I didn't find "I and Love and You" anywhere (this song is on an album by the same name, scheduled to drop in August), I did find a ton of other songs that showed the band isn't just a one random lovely song wonder.

Smalls Lounge update

| | Comments (0)

Showoff Saturdays must have gotten too hot. Club promoter Harry Colon said the air conditioning unit at Smalls Lounge broke. But while it's being fixed, the party will go on at Evolution Nightclub, above the Bourbon Street Saloon, 25 W. Market St. in York.

Rapper Kamaflaj will host this Saturday's event and York native DJ Exel will spin the tunes. Colon is also holding a special event 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 at Evolution. Philadelphia artist and Lil Wayne collaborator Tommy Stars will host and DJs Smash and New York will spin. Click here for more details.

Phoenix: So hot right now

This French band might be named after an Arizona city or a mythical firebird, but they're catchy track "Lisztomania" is blowing up. They shot the video at Hungarian composer Franz Liszt's German home. (Word to the real classics.)

They're album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" dropped May 26. (Read a review.) You might recognize the international indie band's song "Too Young" from the "Lost in Translation" soundtrack. Vive la France!

Fist bumps and other presidential-y stuff

YDR reporter Wade Malcolm investigated the Obama fist bump. Click here to read all about it. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel seems to be a fan of the "ignore text" and the "important person door slam." Watch the video above from NBC's special "Inside the White House." (Didn't they already try that on "The West Wing?") Catch part two at 9 tonight. President Obama might be a fan of knuckles, but he dissed and dismissed the ears of SNLer/Fauxbama Fred Armisen. Oh, snap!

Conan takes over The Tonight Show

| | Comments (0)

Former Late Night host Conan O'Brien began following in the foot steps of his idol Johnny Carson. And he got off to a pretty good start.

His lead in was an homage to his start on Late Night in 1993. We see scenes of Conan running cross-country from New York to LA in well-known spots (including PA. Dutch Country) around the United States while Cheap Trick's "Surrender" blares in the background.

His intro music remained pretty much the same, but his band is now Max Weinberg and The Tonight Show Band (as opposed to the Max Weinberg 7).

He did the customary jump to top off Max's drum roll. I guess Conan will be sticking with that, at least until his knees give out.

Then he made his typical self-depreciating remark when the crowd cheered too long.

"At least we know the applause sign works," he said.

But while the start was familiar, the rest of the show featured a more restrained Conan.

Beatles rock on

| | Comments (0)

rockband1.jpegYou still can't find Beatles music on iTunes, but don't fret: the music will soon be all over the video game world.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr (along with Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison) talked Monday about the release of "The Beatles: Rock Band." Well, Ono and Harrison didn't really talk. They were there for moral support (and perhaps to get paid?).

We've known about the game's release (set for 9-9-09) since March (read ace FlipSide reporter Erin McCracken's blog entry here). But a few more details were released at Microsoft's Electronic Entertainment Expo in southern California. Keep reading for the details.

    Weekend roundup

    | | Comments (0)

    Hold my hand...or not

  • Brought back Fliff Night at Granfalloons. (There was no hippie playing James Taylor, only a DJ with a dirty mouth.)

  • Ate my first ice cream cone of the summer. (But it was filled with frozen yogurt.)

  • Sang along to Eagle Eye Cherry and various other '90s covers at First Cap. (Don't judge me. You know the words, too.)

  • Had an impromptu "Thriller" dance party. (It put me in a "New Moon" mood.)

  • Visited a scenic vista. (I wanted to wear lederhosen and yodel. You can judge me now.)

  • Prince charming

    | | Comments (0)

You remember the Spin Doctors hit "Two Princes." But now England has two monarchs that are eligible(ish) bachelors. Are you on Team William or Team Harry?

Prince Harry has flaws, a questionable reputation and possily multiple personalities. But he might have pulled ahead with his recent trip to NYC. Watching him tear up the polo field, play with kids, wear a uniform and defend Susan Boyle during Matt Lauer's (controversial) interview makes us heart him even more.

Around the watercooler: MTV Movie Awards

    | | Comments (0)

Here are FlipSide's top five moments from the 2009 MTV Movie Awards:

  • Bruno gets up close and personal with Eminem. (Was the storm-out for realz or just for show? Let's hope the only thing that goes viral is the video clip.)

  • Andy Samberg gets up close and personal with Justin Timberlake. (What's with all the gratuitous male quasi-nudity?)

  • "Twilight's" Kristin Stewart plays with her hair, stutters and drops her award during her speech.

  • Ben Stiller wins the Generation Award and gets insulted by a Jared Leto wannabe, criminal and puppet.

  • "Twilight" wins, like, every award. Then, the cast reveals the trailer for "New Moon." Check it out and check out more clips, fashion, etc.
