Bob Edwards was talking to the curators of an art exhibit by several Iranian or Iran-born artists this morning on his satellite radio show when he asked the curators to describe a few of the artists.
One of them, a curator said, is "the Jeff Koons of Iran." His art is explicit, the curator explained.
"Politically explicit or otherwise?" Edwards asked.
"Otherwise," the curator said.
Thus was Koons, a York County native who is a darling of the art world and is known for some sexually-themed art, linked with artistic expression by Iranians whose work is taking on new context given the political upheaval in their country.
The exhibit is "Iran Inside Out" and info (including pictures of the some of the art) is on the Chelsea Art Museum's web site. I didn't catch which artist they compared to Koons; you can scroll through the pics to try to see for yourself, or check Edwards' web site for times that the show will be re-run.
