More construction at York’s White Rose Bar and Grill

FlipSide file; The White Rose Bar, shown here in 2008, expanded its dining area on East Philadelphia Street. That area is now the site of more construction at the bar.

White Rose Bar and Grill has begun demolition of their outdoor courtyard along Philadelphia Street. According to a news release, demolition will last for about a week. Brandenbaugh Enterprises will be removing the concrete railings and pergola that currently enclose the courtyard. A new retractable roof and side wall will be installed allowing the area to be used during all seasons. The renovations are expected to be competed by spring.

In April 2011, the White Rose, which has operated downtown since 1933, started renovations to its Philadelphia Street garage bar. The renovations included a wall separated the bar and dining room.

The restaurant’s development proposal was approved by York City Council in October 2010. Plans were to enclose the existing sidewalk seating with a renovation similar to work done in 2009, that included a new patio bar area. A second-story addition over the existing sidewalk seating of the restaurant was discussed at the time. If that were to happen, developers said, the lower level would be enclosed with retractable windows and the second level would become a patio area. The project was projected to be completed in several phases.

I always wondered why this place gets so much free publicity. Do you think most Yorkers really care what happens at the White Rose? Do we need to know every time they decide to move things around? When you can do a story about the food improving let us know. In the meantime give some free well deserved advertising to the small businesses that desrve it. Maybe the fact that you used to be Tom Sibol’s neighbor is the real reason for all the free advertising not that they really deserve it.

  2. John Brenner says:

Congratulations to Tom and everyone at the White Rose! You continue to be a great gathering point for Yorkers and we are proud of your success. Great job!

  3. I know I never lived next to Tom Sibol! But the real reason I included this post was simply to inform people about the downtown scene. That comes with the territory as a nightlife/entertainment reporter. (Check out previous posts about local bars here: http://www.yorkblog.com/flipside/category/topics/bars/ ) White Rose is one bar/restaurant that many readers frequent, so I thought I’d give them a heads up. The update also served as a way to connect the dots on the ongoing renovations. Please feel free to email me with news/updates about other local businesses and I will address those myself or pass to our business staff. Thank you! emccracken@ydr.com
