I'm really rooting for Mickey Rourke to win the Best Actor Oscar. After his performance in "The Wrestler," he definitely deserves it.
It's been a while since I've seen a really heart-wrenching movie like this one. One that makes you cringe and cry in a span of two hours.
Director Darren Aronofsky grabbed my attention with "Requiem for a Dream," but quickly lost it with "The Fountain." (I liked the concept of the movie, but I just couldn't get into it.)
And, even though I hate pro-wrestling, I was intrigued by the film's storyline. Washed-up wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is alone, broke and becoming more aware of his body's limits and age. He tries to make amends with his estranged and very angry daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and has a kind of sweet crush on a stripper (Marisa Tomei).
Some of the wrestling scenes are really gruesome, which took me (and my weak stomach) by surprise. Go in knowing you're gonna see some very realistic-looking gore. Despite its graphic nature, the movie is worth-seeing, with bits of charm, humor, tenderness and despair, all rolled into one.
