Erin McCracken: July 2009 Archives
Last night, I had my first beef with the Chameleon Club, but we'll get to that later, since I want to rave about the band I saw there last night: ...And They Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.
The sextet made so much noise with their instruments that my ears are still ringing, but it was worth it. I was surprised that there were only about 50 people in the club to see the national act, but the band didn't care. They played their hearts out with dueling drum kits, refrigerator-sized amps and heart-pumping riffs. I'd see them again in a minute.
Then, they were off to the All Points West Music Festival in New Jersey. They play Saturday with acts including Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes and MSTRKRFT.
Watch the "Bells of Creation" video, and then read about the beef on the jump.
"Saved by the Bell" is about to turn 20. (As if I need more reasons to feel old.) Jimmy Fallon has been begging the cast to reunite for his show. But things might be a little tricky. Kelly (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) and Slater (Mario Lopez) might be too busy with their "careers." Screech (Dustin Diamond) was distracted by his tell-all book to for People Magazine. At least Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is ready to spill cast secrets.
Time travel to another decade for the "Back to the '80s: The Totally Awesome Musical" at Penn State York's Pullo Family Performing Arts Center, 1031 Edgecomb Ave. The show runs 7 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8 and is produced by the William Penn Performing Arts Institute. Tickets are $10 to $20. Rad.
The FlipSide ladies head to Foundry Park in York, where the Splash! concert series kicks off this weekend. Let them fill you in about what else is going on downtown.
Since we're halfway through 2009 (gasp!) NPR decided to let listeners vote for the best singles and CDs of the year to this point. See who made the top five in each category:

Best Album: "Merriweather Post Pavillion" by Animal Collective; "Veckatimest" by Grizzly Bear; "Hazards of Love" by The Decemberists; "Middle Cyclone" by Neko Case; "Wilco (The Album)" by Wilco
Check out the expanded list here. Who do you think should have made the list? Share your thoughts here. (Check out the creepy "Two Weeks" video above.)
Dr. Suess' 1971 classic "The Lorax" will be made into a 3-D animated movie that will hit theaters March 2012. (I hope it's not like the dreadful 2000 "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" remake.)
I'm surprised that this took so long. Hollywood's been remaking everything under the sun and being green is so hot right now. Read about The Lorax Project, which protect forests and endangered species.
Buy the original book here and the original cartoon here. It was a Broadway show, too.

So, I guess Live Nation changed their No TIcket fee Wednesday to No Full Price Wednesday. Either way, this latest deal -- which is the same offer as last week -- seems like a keeper. It's basically buy one ticket, get one free, and it applies to Hersheypark Stadium shows. The offer lasts all day today. Check back next Wednesday for the next deal and check Popeye next Thursday to get a breakdown of summer ticket deals. (Photo: Live Nation)

Temperatures are rising. Humidity levels are unbearable. What better way to beat the heat than to dip into a local pool?
Even watching this video of kids splashing around at the York YMCA's Graham Aquatic Center's outdoor pool is refreshing.

Do the recent state budget battle and the health care crisis have you down?

Not even furry four-legged friends are safe from the recent celeb death epidemic. The Wednesday death of Gidget the Chihuahua, the star of the Taco Bell commercials and "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde," made news all over the nation. She was 15. Here's hoping all dogs do go to heaven. (Is this really news or just and excuse to make cliche wisecracks?)
The Taco Bell mascot sold countless bean burritos, but provoked criticism for its Mexican stereotypes. Now, Taco Bell has moved on to offending the entire hip-hop community by ripping off a P. Diddy video.
It's No Fee Wednesday again. This time, Live Nation is offering half off pairs of lawn tickets. That's confusing. Why don't they just call it what it is: Buy one, get one free? This offer runs through midnight and is valid for some shows at Hersheypark Stadium this time. (Photo: Live Nation)
I vowed never to watch, listen to or buy anything Chris Brown created in the future. But last night, I broke down and watched the apology video. His publicist obviously wrote it, and his shirt is hideous. But I hope he's getting help and that he opens dialogue about domestic violence issues so more women don't end up like Rihanna at the hands of other jerks. What do you think? Click here for local domestic violence resources.
Help blaze a trail at the Red Lion Mile Music Festival. The event runs 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday on the Red Lion Mile trail in Red Lion. Chow down on hot dogs and ice cream, and hear musical acts, including Dr. Slothclaw, Waitin' on a Train, and Mr. Fake. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for trail maintenance.
According to a YDR article, organizers say about $25,000 is needed to finish the trail.
"Half the trail is lovely, shady and peaceful and great for easy walking. From North Main to North Franklin, we've still got work to do," trail committee chairman Walt Hughes said.
Adam Yauch, member of the hip-hop pioneer group Beastie Boys, announced yesterday via YouTube video that he'll undergo surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. The Beastie Boys have canceled their summer tour plans and pushed back the release of their album "Hot Sauce Committee Part 1." The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will take their spot at Lollapalooza.
The tumor, which is in the left salivary gland, was discovered last week and is treatable with surgery, often followed by radiation. Yauch said he did not expect any damage to his vocal cords and seems upbeat in the video. The Beastie Boys new track "Too Many Rappers (feat. Nas)" is hot, and hopefully the group has a lot more hip-hop hits ahead of them.
Fashionistas rejoice! Jimmy Choo will design a line for H&M, which has also featured pieces from high-end designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli. Besides the heels Carrie Bradshaw feel in love with on "Sex and the City," the collection will include men and women's bags, accessories and clothes. It hits stores Nov. 14 and won't cost a fortune. H&M offers affordable prices for Choo pumps, which usually cost about $500 a pop. (Photo: AP)
Many important events happened 40 years ago: The moon landing, race riots and Woodstock.

The sad celeb news continues. Author Frank McCourt died in Manhattan on Sunday. He was 78 and battled metastatic melanoma.
According to the New York Times, McCourt taught in the New York City school system for nearly 30 years. In his 60s, he wrote a memoir about his impoverished childhood in Ireland that became the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir "Angela's Ashes." Read more about McCourt and other Book Buzz on the York Daily Record's books blog. (Photo: AP)

According to AP, Walter Cronkite died Friday with his family by his side at his Manhattan home after a long illness. Cronkite anchored the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981. As many as 18 million households tuned in each evening. Two polls pronounced Cronkite the "most trusted man in America." Cronkite shared his thoughts on journalism:
"We are not in journalism to be loved. It takes tremendous courage to be a good journalist. . . You've got to report it because people need to know it. It's not an easy job."At 7 p.m. Sunday, CBS will air a special, "That's the Way it Was: Remembering Walter Cronkite." (Cronkite speaks at the Strand Theater in York in 1998; YDR File)

Apparently, it's all about the Roosevelt's, baby. And here I thought it was "All About the Benjamins."
I didn't know whether to cringe or crack up at this Taco Bell commerical that aired during Tuesday's MLB All Star game. It this great marketing or straight-up annoying? Should MTV run this video?

Emmy contenders were announced bright and early this morning. It came as no surprise that "30 Rock" got a record 22 bids. After three years and tons of golden statues, we get that it's funny. It's sad that no other shows have stepped up and steal its thunder.
According to Variety, new rules expanded the number of nominees. Seven outstanding comedy series? Six instead of five nominees in the actor categories? Why is it getting easier to get nominated for major awards? It definitley doesn't reflect the quailty of shows on these days. I think they should narrow nominees. What do you think?

Critics are raving about the Iraq War movie "The Hurt Locker." Some have even been saying it will be up for an Oscar.
Check out the trailer. The movie's limited release was June 26, but it hasn't come to the area yet.
I'm crossing my fingers that it hits local theaters soon. I bet audiences will be blown away. (Pun kind of intended.)
It's No Service Fee Wednesday agian. Live Nation's offering $29.99 lawn tickets and $49.99 reserved tickets with hot dogs and sodas. The offer lasts until midnight. The Harp & Fiddle closed Monday after a 5-year run. Owner Jimmy Fagan said business was down, but will meet with the owners next week to discuss the bar's future. Locals were surprised:
York's mayor John Brenner: "Every urban area needs a good Irish pub."
Greg DeShong, member of the Love Haters, a band that was to play the Harp Friday: "You never knew how it was doing."
Mary Yeaple, York St. Patrick's Day Parade organizer: "We're sorry to see them go."
Tom Sibol, White Rose Bar & Grill owner: "I think they'll bounce back. It would be best for all of us."

The Harp and Fiddle Irish Pub and Restaurant in downtown York has closed, said Jimmy Fagan, one of three owners. He and the other owners met this morning and decided to close today. The last day of business was Saturday.
"People don't want to go out and spend money," he said. "We will be regrouping."
Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
Cindy Einsig of Red Lion never won anything from scratch-off lottery tickets until she mailed in three losing stubs. Last year, as part of its "Deal or No Deal" game promotion, The Pennsylvania Lottery ran a second-chance drawing.
Seven residents, including Einsig, won a five-day, four-night trip to Los Angeles, a stay in a luxury hotel and a chance to play a non-broadcast version of "Deal or No Deal" with host Howie Mandel.
Then, producers chose Einsig to appear on an actual episode of "Deal or No Deal." The episodes air 7:30 p.m. tonight though Friday on CW15 as part of the show's Lottery Winners Week. Look for Einsig holding case No. 19. (Photo: Submitted)

Southern rockers Molly Hatchet perform at 8:30 tonight. The band, named after a 17th century axe murderess, released their debut on Epic Records in 1978. It went multi-platinum and the band toured with Aerosmith, Bob Seger, the Rolling Stones and others. It's next CD "Flirtin' With Disaster" also achieved multi-platinum status. The band's been through some lineup changes, but celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008.

After two years of negotiations, online radio stations reached an agreement Tuesday involving copyright royalty rates, according to AP. In 2007, the federal Copyright Royalty Board raised the rates that Internet stations must paid artists and labels. The new deal lowered rates.
"Under the agreement, large commercial webcasters will pay copyright owners up to 25 percent of their revenue or a "per-performance" rate...smaller webcasters will pay either a percent of revenue or a percent of expenses."
Pandora -- one of the most popular sites with 30 million users-- seemed satisfied with the deal. Free accounts will now be limited to 40 hours per month. Congress has already passed legislation making the deal legally binding since Internet radio companies operate under a government license. AM/FM broadcasters are exempt from copyright royalty rates unless they stream songs online.

No Service Fee Wednesdays continue today. This time around Live Nation offers lawn tickets, a hot dog and soda for $29.99. The offer lasts until midnight. What'll they throw in next? The kitchen sink?
The promotion doesn't seem to be valid at all shows and all venues. Why isn't Hersheypark Stadium on the list? I'm still confused/not sure if this is a "good deal." I don't think I'd see a Creed show or eat a hot dog, even for free. (Photo: Live Nation)

Michael Jackson's memorial ended with a tribute from his family. USA Today quoted his daughter Paris, 11, as she remembered her father. (Photo: AP)
"Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine," she said, surrounded by aunts Janet and La Toya Jackson. "And I just want to say I love him so much."
The Senfts were touched by Paris' words:
Text message from Dylan at 4:21 p.m.: The end was awesome when they brought all the family on stage and spoke and sang. My dad and I cried when his daughter spoke.

The two-plus hour memorial service is over. Share your thoughts with us. (Photo: AP)
Text from Dylan at 3:45 p.m.: Greatest thing i've ever seen or been a part of...
The ceremony is about to begin. We got another text from the Senfts:
Text from Dylan at 12:53 p.m: We got to our seats- just to the right of the stage maybe 50 ft away at most. They gave everyone an awesome program with a bunch of pictures and messages from his family and friends.

West Manchester Township residents Dan and Dylan Senft are sitting in traffic en route to the Staples Center in Los Angeles for Michael Jackson's memorial. Follow along during the day as they live text the event. (Photo: AP)
Text from Dylan at 12:26 p.m: traffic is terrible and they said the family and body are just leaving forest lawn to come to staples center. At this point they said (the ceremony) will start at least a half hour late...

2. Attended the annual family Fourth of July picnic. (Ate dirt and played old-school Sorry!)

4. Watched the memorable Wimbeldon men's final. (Were the pre-made commercials for Roger Federer's 15th win in poor taste?)
5. Started season two of "The Wire." (What else should I watch this summer?)
Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, aka Ron Weasley, got the H1N1 virus, aka swine flu, but is recovering.
Apparently the young sorcerer, armed with fictional spells and other magic, laughed in the face of death:
[Grint] joked: "I was like 'am I going to die?', but it was fine - just a sore throat."
But that illness isn't why co-star Emma Watson didn't like kissing Grint.

Aerosmith postponed its concert scheduled for Friday at Hersheypark Stadium due to an "artist injury," according to Hershey publicist Melissa Stradnick. She added that the venue was not informed which band member was injured or the extent of the injures. According to Aerosmith's Web site, aeroforceone.com, the band's had setbacks recently and it also postponed a Wednesday show in Cincinnati due to the injury.
ZZ Top, who played the 2008 York Fair, was also on the concert bill. ZZ Top publicist Amy Treco said the Cincinnati show was rescheduled quickly and expects the Hershey show would also be pushed back. Hershey tickets purchased for the concert will be honored at the rescheduled date. Aerosmith tickets qualified for a discount on four- and six-pack tickets from concert promoter Live Nation. The deal will still be accepted.

I let the haters get to me yesterday. I was actually worried that "Public Enemies" wouldn't live up to the hype. But I was satisfied when I walked out of the theater. The movie didn't blow me away. But it definitely didn't disappoint. The costumes, tightly cropped shots and sparse settings were second-to-none. To quote the rap classic: Damn, it feels good to be a gangster. Do "The Time Warp" again at York Little Theatre, 27 S. Belmost St. in Spring Garden Township. This sci-fi raunch 'n' roll spectacular "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" will make you scream. I'm so stoked to see Christian Bale face off against Johnny Depp today in "Public Enemies." (I've been waiting for months.) For the occasion, copy editor Jess Krout brought in a front page of the Hanover Evening Sun from 1934. It ran an AP story about John Dillinger:
ST. PAUL, MINN., APR. 4. -- Federal guns blazing a leaden retort to gang defiance, had cut close today the trail of the arch-fugitive John Dillinger, and reddened it with the blood of one of his gun-toting pals. Read more on the jump.
If you haven't heard Hova's new single "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)," you don't know what you're missing. Consider your mind blown.
The video, which was unveiled at the 2009 BET Awards, was inspired by anti-establishment Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni.
His short summer tour starts Thursday. His album "Blueprint 3" drops Sept. 11. Early prediction: It's his best work yet.
