Getting cozy next to the Fire

arcade fire 1.jpg

That's my future wife there in the center, Regine Chassagne. There have been few times in my life where a musician or band on stage have made me feel like they thought this random stop on a long tour was special for some inexplicable reason, but Arcade Fire did just that for me on Saturday.

My friend Sue and I made the trek out to Upper Darby's Tower Theatre to see the best artist/band to come out of Canada since...(thinks to self:...Alanis, no... Celine, hell no... Bryan Adams, uh-uh... Rush, haha, come on really) ... since ever.

A Revolution of more than baseball?

800x600-logo-3D.jpg

rock concert.jpg

The folks over at Sovereign Bank Stadium have announced the first non-baseball entertainment at the new York Revolution home. July 2 will see fireworks and a performance by the York Symphony Orchestra, and Aug. 26 will be called Faith and Family Day and feature a concert by Christian rock band NewSong.

This is good news and all, but it's important to note that both of these events are attached to actual ball games. You want to hear YSO? Buy a ticket to that game. Same goes for NewSong. I guess they're testing the waters over there to see if they get a boost in ticket sales on those game days to show that people really do want to see other forms of entertainment there. I know I do.

Was Jesus a rock star?

lennonchristsuperstar.jpg

Word on the street has it that to celebrate Easter, WTPA 93.5-FM will be "resurrecting" famous dead musicians, playing off that whole resurrection theme of Easter. Makes sense, right? I'm sure this won't offend ANY religious folk at all.

Why are ninjas so funny?

tmnt-3.jpg

"TMNT" was the No. 1 movie in America for a reason this past week - it rocked. OK, so maybe I'm a little biased since I spent many a day in my youth (nearly two decades ago) playing with Ninja Turtle action figures, video games, going to the "Ninja Turtles: Coming Out of Their Shells" live tour, dressing up as a Ninja Turtle for Halloween and easily getting caught during a game of hide-and-go-seek-in-the-dark because I accidentally wore my glow-in-the-dark Leonardo PJs.

In all seriousness, the movie was better than I expected. Sure, there were plenty of groan-worthy jokes and plot holes big enough to drop a man hole cover through, but all-in-all this was actually a more grown-up Ninja Turtles movie in comparison to its early '90s counterparts. Go see it. Now.

Gotta give those teens credit...

As entertainment reporter, I talk to local bands. A lot. A whole lot. It's a blessing and a curse. The truth is, there is something supernatural about York County because I think there are more bands than there are people. You think I'm kidding but they're everywhere. I open my shower curtain at night and there's a new local band holding out my towel for me. It's kind of getting creepy.

When it comes to self-promotion some bands are better than others. Some contact me and when I try and get back to them, I never hear from them again. Some check in with frequent e-mails to make sure I haven't forgotten that I promised them a profile in FlipSide. I haven't.

A few reviews...

For your reading pleasure, here are a couple mini reviews on the good and the bad that I've seen or heard lately. Try and enjoy.

neon.jpg

The Arcade Fire - "Neon Bible" - Mega wow. It took me a few listens to really get into The Arcade Fire's follow up to "Funeral," but hot diggity damn, it's solid. It's a little more morose than their last outing, which is odd, since they wrote "Funeral" while they all had family members dropping dead like flies, but it is what it is. As much as I hate to admit it, the best track on here is a revamped version of "No Cars Go," from their early self-titled EP. I never cared much for the song... until now. Now it lights up my soul. It's an overdrive-fantasy-turn-it-up-to-11-sends-shivers-down-your-spine-while-driving-80-down-the-highway-in-a-snowstorm kinda song. Or so I think. Another great track? "Black Waves/Bad Vibrations." 9 out of 10.

HDTV - My newest worst best friend

pam beesly.jpg

Here's is my Popeye pop culture column from this week's FlipSide.

There's an evil presence lurking in my apartment as we speak, waiting for me to get home this evening. It's a big, black ominous thing that has teased and tortured me, keeping me awake for hours at night when I should've been sleeping. And the worst part? I'm the one who brought it in and gave it a home more than a month ago.

It all began around Christmas when I was fed up with not having an HDTV. I'm a bit of a technophile, and it pained me that while I had a PlayStation 2, Macbook with DVI (high-def capable) output and the finances for digital cable, I still had a junky old standard definition TV.

It was time for an upgrade, so I did some Internet-hunting and found a great deal on a 37-inch Westinghouse. I pulled out the credit card and voilĂ ! A few days later, the delivery man was knocking at my door, dragging a box big enough to sleep in. After single-handedly pulling the behemoth box up a flight of stairs, I unwrapped the monolith of technology and plugged it in. My life hasn't been the same since.

Super Bowl Ads: GM is morbidly amusing

Robot Loneliness

Add to My Profile | More Videos

I'm darkly humorous kinda guy and somehow often find humor in depressing things and sadness in humorous things. The perfect embodiment of this so far tonight would be GM's suicidal machine commercial.

For those who missed it, an assembly line robot that helps piece together GM cars is laid off and goes on through a depressing run of low-level work before finding himself on the edge of a bridge, debating whether or not to "jump." I didn't actually think GM would go there, but they actually had the machine commit robotic suicide. True, it turned out to be a dream, but still. Do robots dream of electric sheep? No apparently, they dream of killing themselves.

Super Bowl Ads: Nothin wrong with a little man love, says Snickers

Snickers Kiss

Add to My Profile | More Videos

Normally, humor dealing with guys' homophobia feels a bit too 1994 for me, but the Snicker's mechanic guys gave me a little man crush on the candy company. The Lady and the Tramp-ish moment as one dude fails to resist the urge of of the gooey nougat of Snickers in another man's mouth made ME snicker pretty hard, even if it was a little low-brow.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force are terrorists! Ah!

mooninite.jpg

I've been staring at the blinking cursor for a couple minutes now because I don't even know where to begin this post. By now, you've probably heard about the guerilla marketing campaign gone wrong in which a couple of guys who planted some Lite Brite-type devices depicting characters from the Adult Swim show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" around Boston were arrested for "placing a hoax device in a way that results in panic," according to this CNN article.

God almighty, Wii at last!

Christmas came and went uneventfully this year. There was no Nintendo Wii under my tree, just an I.O.U. from the 'rents who had tried their best to track one down, but to no avail. For weeks, I have hunted high and low, near and far, in search of my elusive Wii, especially knowing that when the time came, I wouldn't have to pay for it. That always helps.

Check out my recent Popeye column to bring you up to speed on the hunt.

Anyway, yesterday the gaming gods smiled down upon me, and my hunt came to a close - Toys R Us received nine systems in minutes before I called in the early afternoon.

Anatomy of a casting call

I'm not a morning person.

I was more than delighted when I took this job to find out the shift didn't start until 10 a.m. rather than the typical 8 or 9. But sometimes, there are some things just worth getting up at the crack of dawn (or before) for.

In this case, it was a casting call for "Survivor" and "Amazing Race" held at Harrisburg Mall. The event didn't start until 10 a.m., but when word got out that people would be allowed to start lining up as early as 5:30, we knew we had to get there early. OK, OK, I'm lying. I was a wee bit hesitant to wake at 4:30 in the freakin' morning, but our ever-energetic photographer Jay convinced me it would be worth the sleep sacrifice. And he was right (ya hear that, Jay?)

Macworld = Christmas

Dec. 25 was nice to me this year, but it wasn't anything compared to Jan. 9. Tuesday was the day that Steve Jobs (i.e. Santa Claus) took the stage for his annual keynote speech at Macworld (i.e. the North Pole) and introduced the world to the iPhone (i.e. one of the coolest consumer electronics ever).

2007-01-09T215728Z_01_NOOTR_RTRIDSP_2_TECH-APPLE-MACWORLD-DC.jpg

The rumors circulating this device had been ongoing for a couple years and, in true Apple fashion, almost all the "leaked" details were wrong - in the best kind of way. Leading up to its introduction, there were rumors of Apple releasing a widescreen iPod, a tablet version of the Mac and a phone of some sort. Turns out, all those were true - except they were really all one device all along.

Rocky rocked after all

Rocky-6.jpg

All too often, we go and see flicks with high expectations, only to be let down immensely afterwards. "King Kong." "Star Wars: Episode 1." Even "Borat" to a degree.

Anyway, I'm home in the DC area for the week between Christmas and New Year's, and, for better or worse, have been spending a lot of time with my folks. I trust their judgment on movies about as much as I would trust tossing beers back with James Frey as we swap college tales. They wanted to see "Rocky Balboa," aka Rocky 6. At the very least, I thought, it was a free movie ticket and free dinner afterward.

Conceptually, a sixth Rocky movie is absurd. Everyone knows that. A man in his 50s taking on a heavyweight champ in his prime is, simply put, whack. As each Rocky movie degraded in quality, I was set to have a good time just making fun of the flick.

But... it didn't suck.

I'm not going to say I loved the movie. It certainly had a few flaws in it with character development, overuse of deus ex machina and a rather passe, overly dramatic filmmaking style, except where it needed it most (during the climactic fight). But on the whole, I dug it. In fact, I'd say it's the best Rocky flick since numero uno. How? It's hard to discuss without spoiling plot elements (a sin in the world of former college film majors), but unlike the other flicks, this one isn't really about the fight - at least not the one in the ring.

Anyway, check it out if you get a chance. The best way to approach it is to see the first film beforehand and then pretend II-V were simply never made. To me, there is Rocky I and there is Rocky Balboa. That is all.
