The cereal serial 11/06/09

| | Comments (0)

Five links to start your day off right: Part of a complete, balanced breakfast.

  • Oprah might leave network TV in 2011. (I thought the world was going to end in 2012.)

  • Donate outerwear to help the less fortunate stay warm this winter. (Coats for a cause.)

  • Check out the list of performers for the Nov. 22 American Music Awards.

  • "New Moon" star Kristen Stewart needs to keep her mouth shut. (Annoying actors.)

  • It's National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. (Creature comfort.)

  • First look: 'Pirate Radio'

    | | Comments (0)

You'd expect nothing less than an unforgettable comedy from Focus Features and Richard Curtis ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"). Based on actual events, "Pirate Radio" follows seafaring deejays who capture airwaves, defy the government and captivate listeners in 1960s Britain. This looks like the coolest music movie since "Almost Famous." Critics are already raving.

The stellar ensemble cast includes Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans and many other rising stars. The soundtrack has enough clout to be its own character. Expect tunes from The Kinks, The Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, etc. The movie rocks into theaters Nov. 13.

  • Win one of three pairs of tickets to "Rockin' Christmas with The King" Dec. 12 at the Pullo Center. (Elvis with elves.)

  • Disney is taking Mickey Mouse back to the '20s with the new videogame "Epic Mickey." (Now if only they'd start making fairy tales again.)

  • Sam Snyder, Yoe's borough council president, discovered letters written by Chester Alan Arthur. (Presidential papers.)

  • Losing sleep has never been so worth it. (Is the World Series why they invented coffee?)

  • Weekend roundup 11/02/09

Five weekend highlights. (Thank goodness for selective memory.)
Had a mini "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" marathon. (Thank you YouTube.)

Tried Thai food from Pho Bistro in York. (Menu added to my take-out collection.)

Haunted the White Rose and a friend's party on Halloween. (Check in Tuesday for promised pics of FlipSide's costume.)

Saw "This Is It," the No. 1 movie. (Those moves. That voice. Miss you M.J.)

Watched the Yanks beat the Phils...again. (I missed "Mad Men" for that?)

Songs left off the 'New Moon' soundtrack

OK. I actually kind of dig the "New Moon" soundtrack. (I'm still a little sore about all the selling out involved, but I'll get over it.) However, I've found five tracks that definitely should have made the cut. (I put two Radiohead songs on because Stephenie Meyer is a huge fan. The Vampire Weekend track is more about the band's name.)

What tunes would you add to the soundtrack?

    And the countdown continues.

    First look: 'Invictus'

Finally. A decent sports movie with a political/historical twist. Being a lover of all things film, I was surprised and delighted when I saw this "Invictus" promo air during game one of the World Series. I hadn't heard anything about this movie, but I already see some gold, shiny statues in it's future.
    (It hits theaters Dec. 11.)

Clint Eastwood directs the underdog story (score!) about Nelson Mandela's attempt to unite South Africa behind the 1995 Rugby World Cup final. Morgan Freeman plays Mandela and Matt Damon stars as Springboks captain Francois Pienaar. The film is based on John Carlin's book "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation." The title is from a William Ernest Henley poem. ("Invictus" = "Unconquered" in Latin.)
