Weekend roundup

| | Comments (0)

bet.jpeg 1. Went to the Revs game/ Battle of the Bands Friday. (Read the live twitter feed.)

2. Didn't get tickets to this concert. (Summer bummer)

3. Saw an old classic ("The Philadelphia Story") and a new classic ("Empire Records").

4. Spent more time hanging out at the White Rose. (It might be habit forming.)

5. Caught a little bit of the BET Awards/Michael Jackson tribute. (Click here for more.)

The King of pop is dead and now so is the King of OxiClean. R.I.P. Billy Mays. The infomercial world won't be the same without his booming voice and immaculate beard.

rossum.JPG This week saw some sad news. FlipSide will help you lighten up this weekend.

Have a fling Celtic-style at Mount Hope Estate and Winery.
Read about a local family's "America's Got Talent" audition.
Take a Photo Walk through York.
Did you see "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" yet? Click here to see local Transformers. Check back Monday for the Weekend Roundup. Ciao for now.

First look: 'Alice in Wonderland'

alice.jpeg
Tim Burton directs the "Alice in Wonderland" remake, which is scheduled to hit theaters March 5, 2010. The cast list is no surprise: Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter play the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway plays the White Queen and Aussie newcomer Mia Wasikowska plays Alice. For cast and set photos, click here. Click here or here to see "Alice in Wonderland" through the years.

I'm thinking this looks too much like Burton's 2005 remake of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Can Burton make a movie without Johnny Depp? (Photo: Disney)

Michael Jackson as Capt. EO

Who can forget watching Michael Jackson as Captain EO at EPCOT along with his ragtag crew that included Fuzzball, Idee and Odee and, of course, the clumsy Hooter.

Big changes for 2010 best picture race

| | Comments (0)

oscar.jpeg I almost hit the ceiling when I read this news.

According to Variety, Film Academy president Sid Ganis announced this morning that there will be 10 best picture nominees at the 82nd Oscar ceremony March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Oscar noms will be released Feb. 2, 2010.

For realz? I like the current cutthroat style. Why does the Academy suddenly feel the need to kick it old school? Does that mean that some "not that great" movies will make the cut? Won't the Oscars ceremony be even longer? Will Nate Silver's predictions be more wrong next year? I need an explanation. I need...to breath. Where's my paper bag?

Wolf shirts: So hot right now

| | Comments (0)

wolf.jpeg
Ditch those maxi dresses and madras shorts. The wolf T-shirt could be the must-have ironic fashion item of the summer. (Kind of gives "Wolf Like Me" a whole new meaning.) Click here to see what might have started this trend. Here's more random wolf stuff.

Wolf mania is spreading. Check out the "New Moon" movie poster and this Zach Galifianakis quote from "The Hangover:"

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!

Weekend roundup

1. Dined outside and danced to Bruce Springsteen covers at the Harp & Fiddle. (Perfect way to start summer.)
2. Saw "An American in Paris."
(I hope to be one someday.)
3. Went to the Iron Hill Brewery in Lancaster. (Drowned my sorrows in Raspberry Wheat Ale after the Phillies lost.)
4. Nursed a bad case of poison ivy. (Seasonal hazard.)
5. Watched a lot of golf, but missed the final round of the U.S. Open.

Trailer wars: Relive the '80s

| | Comments (0)

It's been almost 25 years since "Ghostbusters" hit the big screen.

Check out the new video game. Will there be another movie made and, more importantly, will it be any good?

At least they used the sweet theme song by Ray Parker Jr. for the video game. Classic.
"G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" is scheduled to be released Aug. 7. It's been 45 years since the action figures hit shelves.

I admit, I was more into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than G.I. Joe, but this movie just looks cheesy. There are a lot of rumors swirling around the movie, too. (That's never a good sign.)

1. Finally saw "The Hangover." Zach Galifianakis has arrived. (The photo montage at the end of the movie is priceless and probably why it's still No. 1.)
2. Rearranged some furniture. (Relived the couch scene from "Friends," like, three times.)
3. Took advantage of the new outdoor seating at White Rose (until a summer shower rained on my parade).
4. Got my tan on at Lake Marburg. (Nothing like the sight of some water to cure my "Landlocked Blues.")
5. Read this piece about the newly liberated American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert.

McCartney/MGMT collaboration?

| | Comments (0)

mcc.jpeg Is Paul McCartney thinking about teaming up with Brooklyn duo MGMT? Maybe the former Beatle wants that "Electric Feel."

I like MGMT. But what have they done recently besides make this disturbing video?

Sir Paul's still tearing it up. He performs July 17 and 18 at Citi Field (home of the New York Mets). Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. June 15. Click here for tickets. Get presale tickets here. "The Beatles: Rock Band" drops Sept. 9. Pre order it here.

Dirty Projectors: So hot right now

| | Comments (0)

Meet the Brooklyn art-rock band of the moment: Dirty Projectors. Their album "Bitte Orca" dropped June 9.

Their "experimental" sound was praised by Pitchfork, NPR and Entertainment Weekly. So, you should dig it, too. At least until next Tuesday when another indie act steals the buzz. Or, you can be like me and rant about interchangeable male/female lead singers. (Get over the phobia of anything conventional and pick a voice, please.)

Before I get zapped by the music gods, let me drop the tour details: Dirty Projectors hit the road with TV on the Radio, and perform Friday at Bonnaroo. Their headlining tour starts June 17 in Philadelphia.

Weekend roundup

1. Tried to see "The Hangover" twice, but it was sold out. (I hate hangovers. I "Blame It" on the alcohol like Jamie Foxx and Ron Howard.)
2. Visited the new bar at the White Rose. (Nice wood accents, but needs more outside seating.)
3. Headed to Hanover to spend an evening away from the street rod hustle. (York needs more patios with twinkle lights like KClinger's.)
4. Hiked around Lake Redman and Lake Williams. (I was bitten by the nature bug and other insects.)
5. Dined at Bistro 19. (I loved MB & Company's ambiance, but the Bistro has huge salads and free fudge samples.)

York Revolution players on the big screen

| | Comments (0)

york.jpeg YDR sports writer Jim Seip broke the news York Revolution players attended a recent casting call to play baseball players in an upcoming movie directed by James L. Brooks.

Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon stars as a softball player torn between two characters played by Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd.

Pitchers Corey Thurman, Daryl Harang and Bob Zimmermann earned callbacks to attend a rehearsal and uniform fitting Monday at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Filming is scheduled to start in July in Philadelphia.

Around the watercooler: MTV Movie Awards

| | Comments (0)

Here are FlipSide's top five moments from the 2009 MTV Movie Awards:

  • Bruno gets up close and personal with Eminem. (Was the storm-out for realz or just for show? Let's hope the only thing that goes viral is the video clip.)

  • Andy Samberg gets up close and personal with Justin Timberlake. (What's with all the gratuitous male quasi-nudity?)

  • "Twilight's" Kristin Stewart plays with her hair, stutters and drops her award during her speech.

  • Ben Stiller wins the Generation Award and gets insulted by a Jared Leto wannabe, criminal and puppet.

  • "Twilight" wins, like, every award. Then, the cast reveals the trailer for "New Moon." Check it out and check out more clips, fashion, etc.
