"Project Runway" Re-cap

rate_509_kenley[1].jpegSeason five of "Project Runway" continued it's reign of fashion terror with this week's challenge: Create an avant garde look based on a sign from the zodiac.

Re-capper Erin McCracken was on Fair duty Wednsday covering the Seether/Breaking Benjamin show so I'm subbing with the review.

I'll get this out of the way, Joe won, although there will be no more immunity for the designers.

The episode's surprise twist: Designers who had been given the boot earlier in the season were paired with the remaining eight. There was plenty of drama and cattiness to be had, especially with the return of sad, injured Keith and his mini ponytail, who was paired with rightfully bitter Terri.

Be the next voiceover guy or girl

Hollywood's most well-known movie trailer voiceover artist Don LaFontaine (you know, the "in a world ..." guy) died Monday at age 68. We'd like to know who in Central Pennsylvania could be his replacement. Check out the story here and find out how to enter.

'90210': Same zip different vibe

90210.jpg

I rushed home last night to catch the two-hour premiere of "90210" the strange re-make of the now-classic 90s hit "Beverly Hills 90210".

I'm not ashamed of it.

OK I'm a little ashamed of it. My fiance, who was (and let's face it, still is) Brandon Walsh's No. 1 fan got me hooked to the original a couple years ago, when it was finally released on DVD (sans the original music, which probably made the show even more likeable).

I've since looked forward to each new season. And while I can't relate to the likes of Brandon, Brenda, Kelly, Dylan and the rest of the gang, the reliably over-dramatic plotlines keep me coming back to the teen soap opera.

While the CW's re-make contains the ghosts of the West Beverly gang, I'm just not sold on it.

Tearful tribute to Estelle Getty

So apparantly, some people out there are taking the death of "Golden Girl" Estelle Getty rather hard:

I can't even imagine what sorts of videos we see when Betty White dies.

'The Dark Knight,' the Joker and moral quandaries

Culture%20Shock%20-%20The%20Joker-thumb[1].jpegIt's not often I leave the theater after watching an action movie and launch into philosphical discussions with my fellow moviegoer about morality.

But then, "The Dark Knight" just isn't your typical action movie.

I agree with everything that Erin said in her post about the movie: Christian Bale is spot-on as Bruce Wayne, Heath Ledger deserves an Oscar for his sinister portrayal of the Joker, and the supporting cast was excellent.

And yea, the action sequences were awesome. Batman flying into a Hong Kong high rise and kidnap (or extradite ... you decide) a criminal, then float into a moving plane was one of the coolest stunts I've seen in any of the "Batman" movies.

But what makes the movie transcend your typical Comic-based blockbuster are The Joker's persistant attempts to make Gotham turn to its baser instincts.

'Project Runway' V: What is girl-licious?

Here are some assorted thoughts on the first episode of season five

1. Let's just talk about Blayne for a second. Anybody else find his tanning obsession just a little creepy? And enough of the Girl-licious. What does that even mean? I wasn't a huge Christian fan, but at least he sold us fierceness without making it seem like a cheap marketing ploy ... OK maybe it was a little cheap. I'm not alone on this either.

Rilo Kiley plays in Baltimore

Saturday night my sweetie and I ventured down south to Baltimore to catch Rilo Kiley at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore.

The groups sing-along inducing pop totally kicked me out of my post-cleaning-in-5-billion-degree-heat stupor, and made me forget my achin' feet (Note, no matter how cute your shoes are, if the plan is to stand for three hours, heels are a bad choice).

A perfect breakup song

OK, so I know I'm a almost year late, but various things: Giant piles of paper around my desk, obsessively checking www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com and planning a wedding have prevented me from writing about Rilo Kiley's 2007 release "Under the Blacklight."

Specifically, extolling "Breakin' Up," Jenny Lewis' kiss off to, I suspect, Mr. Bad News of "Portions For Foxes" Fame.

Finally, a reason to watch beauty pageants

Anybody see NBC's ads for this year's Miss USA Pageant?

Instead of going with the standard "watch beautiful, talented woman with blinding teeth strut around a stage in bikinis and evening gowns" route, NBC took a slight detour, deciding instead to celebrate pageant mishaps.

It's as if the ad execs were all sitting around a table going, "Let's be honest, nobody cares about world peace, they want more Miss South Carolina and chicks falling on their face."

And I'm not going to lie, I am a bit tempted to subject myself to two hours for sequins and petroleum jelly for the chance to see Miss Alabama take a dive on national television. But then again, I can probably save myself the anguish and just catch the juicy parts on YouTube.
