H1N1 vaccination vs. egg allergy

| | Comments (0)

So fortunately Ava has gotten over her weekend illness like a champ and has been in good spirits the past two days.

But between seeing the pediatrician on Monday and a previously scheduled appointment with the allergist Wednesday, now I have a new dilemma: whether or not to vaccinate Ava against H1N1.

Before I wrote that I thought I wanted to have her vaccinated. Now, I'm not so sure.

My pediatrician said:

  • They recommend it. Ava is essentially asthmatic (too young to officially diagnose) and her doctor thinks if she gets hit with the H1N1, it could be bad.

  • Some top dogs (I forget who) said their official recommendation is people with egg allergy who haven't had an anaphylatic reaction, should get the vaccination.

My allergist said:

  • They don't recommend it because she is highly reactive to egg and has shown to have an immediate systematic response.

  • There is always a first time for anaphylaxsis.

One possible solution would be to load her up on antihistamines and Prednasone before she has the shot. But nothing is guaranteed.

So they've now left it up to me. H1N1 vs. anaphylaxsis.

Neither is a good choice.

I'll let you know what i decide.
