About this blog
There’s no denying that food allergies are a growing concern in the US. With about 3 million children affected -- 1 in 17 under age 3 -- it’s likely you know someone dealing with food issues.
My 2-year-old daughter, Ava, is part of that 3 million. But while her food allergies seem to bring never-ending challenges, I always remind myself that “having less may bring you more.”
Join me, a wannabe foodie, in my quest to make my daughter’s food experiences positive ones while trying to save time, money and my sanity.

Cheetos are the bane of my existence
And not just the actual Cheetos brand either. Any of those glow-in-the-dark orange products. Not a fan. My parents never gave them to me when I was growing up, and the taste didn’t really appeal to me when I got … Continue reading
Finding foods that the kids love
Ava loungin’ with her cream cheese nose. We all know how picky kids can be — even if they don’t have food allergies. So it’s nice to stumble across a product that goes over well. Ours currently is Tofutti’s Better … Continue reading
The allergen-free items lurking in my pantry
The above photo are some of the allergen-free products that reside in my pantry right now. They are the items that I buy for one specific use, then they sit there. Lonely and un-used because I can’t find an easy … Continue reading
Spotlight on ‘Natural Choices’ in York
A reader named Ron alerted me a few days ago to a allergy-friendly store in York that I had never heard of before: Natural Choices. I took a trip yesterday to the store on Industrial Highway with my daughter and … Continue reading
New summer camp in the works for kids with food allergies
FAAN is developing Camp TAG, a camp they bill as a place where kids with allergies don’t have to worry about reactions and can meet other kids who are going through the same thing. Sounds like a great idea. Here’s … Continue reading
FAAN’s annual conference coming to Baltimore
The first of four Food Allergy Conferences will be headed to Charm City on March 27. It will be at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel (300 S. Charles Street) I skimmed the topics, and it looks pretty informative if you … Continue reading
Recipe of the day: Portobello burgers
I find it hard to believe that I’ve never mentioned portobellos on this blog before because I love them. Any mushroom really. It’s funny, too, to think how I used to make faces when my father would eat them. But … Continue reading
Recipe of the day: Fudge chocolate chip muffins
One Web site I’ve been meaning to check out in a looong time is that of Bethenny Frankel. For those who don’t know, Frankel is one of the ‘housewives’ on “The Real Housewives of New York City.” I am utterly … Continue reading

More on teff flour
After my last entry about Ethiopian food and teff, I made sure to head to the organic aisles at the Giant on Carlisle Road. Sure enough, Bob’s Red Mill makes a whole grain teff flour. I briefly read the back … Continue reading
Ethiopian food a natural fit for allergy sufferers
When researching the Interweb for recipes and products, I’ve always found the same theme running through people’s advice: Look to other cultures for products that are free of allergies. Asian food is a good example ala rice noodles. But I … Continue reading
