The L.A. Times had an article about a physician doing immunotherapy for food allergies.
Dr. Dr. Richard L. Wasserman in Dallas has treated less than 100 patients, but has been successfully re-introducing the allergen to their diet. His work helped rid kids of potentially fatal allergies. One girl had been severly allergic to milk since she was 11 months old, but the treatment for the now 17-year-old allowed her to eat ice cream with no ill effects.
What a relief, right? For those of us who are constantly in fear of food, it would provide peace of mind.
But don’t get too excited because it’s not likely to be mainstream anytime soon. Physicians worry about it being performed outside a hospital-setting because of deadly reactions. And allergists say there isn’t enough research behind it yet.
I’m a big fan of introducing allergens into the diet. In our situation (Ava hasn’t had a severe reaction – fingers crossed!), it makes sense and Ava’s test results back me up.
What are your thoughts?
About this blog
There’s no denying that food allergies are a growing concern in the US. With about 3 million children affected -- 1 in 17 under age 3 -- it’s likely you know someone dealing with food issues.
My 2-year-old daughter, Ava, is part of that 3 million. But while her food allergies seem to bring never-ending challenges, I always remind myself that “having less may bring you more.”
Join me, a wannabe foodie, in my quest to make my daughter’s food experiences positive ones while trying to save time, money and my sanity.
