Marcellus Shale: State, EPA ramping up oversight

| | Comments (1)

Gov. Ed Rendell said he is hiring additional personnel to monitor the drilling process for natural gas in the state's Marcellus Shale formation and the U.S. EPA is rolling out an effort to make sure anyone who sees something fishy around these sites reports it.

Marcellus Shale is a rock formation deep under Pennsylvania and many other states that is full of natural gas. Although most formation maps put the shale outside York County, it covers much of the state and could be a financial boon for the Commonwealth for years to come.

The governor said he has instructed the Department of Environmental Protection to hire an addition 68 staffers to oversee drilling in Pennsylvania, in addition to other moves for 2010.

The EPA has also set up a call line for people to report suspicious behavior that could be related to fuel extraction.
