Ford refocuses its hybrid vision

| | Comments (2)

Ford Motor Co. is dropping its pledge to build 250,000 gas-electric hybrid cars per year by 2010.

Instead, the No. 2 U.S. carmaker will focus on other fuel-saving technologies in a switch that has provoked environmentalists, The Washington Post reported.

Ford said the 250,000 goal was 'too narrow' to substantially improve vehicle fuel economy or curb carbon dioxide emissions.

Among alternate technologies the company is considering are diesel, biodiesel and ethanol fuel blend E85

Ford may be lessening on hybrids but it still is planning on creating an Expedition hybrid. I just do believe that this could be quite interesting. Anyhow, with Toyota getting the most of the hybrid share, I think Ford should focus on a segment that could bring them more sales.

Ford (the we love hybrids, no we don’t love hybrids car company) seems to change their marketing plan for hybrids every few weeks.

Is an Expedition hybrid a place to invest technology for 2010!? Expedition sales fell by 29.8% in May compared to the same period last year. There is also an 82-day supply overload in dealer lots.

The market shift is toward fuel efficient 4 cylinder cars.

Toyota’s current market share increase is based on people wanting reliable, highly fuel efficient cars and a perception that Toyota can deliver that. That might be a place for Ford to start.
