Mini cars are hot

Sub-subcompacts "are the new hot darlings of the market," says George Peterson of industry consultant AutoPacific. And they appear to be draining sales away from compact sedans.

The Chevy Aveo, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Nissan, Versa Hyundai Accent were among the minis whose sales doubled in the first quarter.

The larger compacts like the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus Hyundai Elantra, and Chevy Cobalt tapered off during the first quarter.

The compacts have grown in size over the years possibly making them more "mid-sized" in a shrinking size market that shifting from, more, to less is better. The 2007 Civic has the same basic headroom and legroom as a 1990 Honda Accord, traditionally the larger model.

Look for more minis as the market strengthens.

I just saw a car yesterday that would make models like the Yaris, Aveo and Fit look like veritable road hogs. I think it was a "Smart Car" and I couldn't take my eyes off of it while it was waiting at a light surrounded by hulking SUVs. Really cool looking and I'm sure a chick magnet for the owner. Hopefully this country will wake up and smell the petrol. The wasteful days of the McHummers and McMansions are numbered.

The Smart Car has an interesting look to it and was originally the concept of a swiss watch maker in the mid 90's. I have always been surprised that the car hasn't gotten better mileage (like the 40's) as it is so small. Maybe they have plans for a tiny diesel. Hybrid Technologies is marketing an all electric version powered by Lithium cells that can go 80 mph and has a range of 120-150 miles

Yeah, it is rather surprising. I just assumed it would have gotten something in the 50's. But still it is rather fun to look at and I'm sure the parallel parking challenged and those with cluttered garages would love it.
