I headed down to Durham, North Carolina for a graduation over the weekend. I was trying to squeeze the most mileage I could out of a 2005 Civic Hybrid with a manual transmission with 65,000 miles on it. I think 56.7 miles per gallon might be a record for me.
My secret formula: Use cruise control and set it to 65. I did have the impossible to recreate advantage of no traffic jams on Interstate 95.

Compared to your car, mine is a tank - 96 Chev Lumina (3.1 liter V-6) However, using some of the techniques I have been reading about, I can get about 42 mpg on the highway. as far as using cruise control, I find it works great on flat land, lousy in the mountains.
Happy hypermiling!

I have a Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission. I primarily drive in the city and find I can exceed 34 mpg (U.S.) / 7l/10km in the rest of the world. I use just the basic techniques:
- keep engine RPM around 2,000
- slow starts and idle into stops.
- Never exceed the posted speed limit
- use engine breaking downhill
- tires properly inflated / car tuned.
- slow down before turns in order to avoid braking.
I also use the cruise control a lot, but then most of my driving is on fairly flat terrain. I will also turn off the engine if and only if it looks like I'm not going to be moving for a couple of minutes.
