A metal band surrounds the outside edges of the phone providing a firm backstop for the buttons. There is a separate button for up and down volume. A rubbery back adds to the nice feel.
As much as I like Samsung phones, my first reaction is to put some Otterbox armor on them. LG phones usually have a quality feel from the start.
The 4.7″ (True HD AH–IPS) 1280 x 720 Pixels, protected by Corning® Gorilla® Glass is sharp with white whites. Not much more to say when it’s just great.
LG adds it’s own color to the Android 4.0.4 operating system with software additions. A toggle widget that you can fully customize in the pull-down menu allows you to add QuickMemo, sound, NFC, airplane mode, sync, rotation lock, Brightness, and data flow. The order can be changed.
QuickMemo provides a short cut to a screen grab (usually volume down and power at the same time) Then you have an option to jot some quick notes on the saved screen shot and immediately save to a folder in the gallery.
Note: the Near Field Communication (NFC) on this phone works with ISIS. A disclaimer on the Verizon site says ISIS (Ready devices will be available in Salt Lake City, UT and Austin, TX markets only) So this isn’t Google Wallet NFC. The NFC on the Spectrum 2 works with Android Beam – share contacts, web pages, videos, directions, and apps via NFC with another phone.
Options in WiFi allow you to open a connection to WiFi, if you have it shut off, when apps open and to exclude files over 5 MB from using the cell data connection.
A power saving section allows you to customize which functions in the phone you want to wind down when the battery is getting low.
The Spectrum 2 includes a Wireless Charging Battery Cover (included) and Wireless Charging Pad (sold separately).
The 8 MP camera works well with a maximum size of 3264 x 2448 pixils. There is a 6 MP 16:9 (wide frame) as well as the ability to shoot smaller file sizes.
Full 1080p HD Video Recording
A full suite of camera options including face tracking focus, panorama, HDR, continuous shot, night mode, filters, self timer, geo-tagging… and a nice universal reset for your next shot after you have fiddled with everything.
The LG Spectrum 2 has the ability to make you ugly and beautiful.
Using the Big Eyes and Small Eyes video filter at right in a still video grab and a video at the end of this post using Big Eyes.
One of the more bazaar video filtering sets I have seen. You can select a body part to distort: Big Mouth, Big Eyes, Small Mouth, Big Nose, Small Eyes and Squeeze…. and it does this in motion real-time
I suddenly have the desire to make a horror film of my co-workers.
On the still side there is a “beautiful” filter that automatically softens and lightens features on a face photo, but not the background, removing wrinkles and blemishes.
Overall, the LG Spectrum 2 is a quick phone with a great camera, and excellent screen if you are looking for a Verizon phone on a 2 year contract for $99 (12/24)
