Cancer society seeks volunteers for Relay for Life committees

The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers who have a passion for fighting back against cancer. Volunteers are needed join the Relay For Life 2013 Planning Committees in Southern York County and Red Lion/Windsor – East York County event areas.

Help to make a meaningful difference in your community by raising funds to assist cancer patients and families with education, patient services, advocacy, and cancer research.

A lot of preparation goes into making an event, such as sponsorship, team recruitment, survivorship, logistics, entertainment, etc. The committees meet one time a month throughout the year and the staff partner will work with you around your interests.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Kids use ‘chore money’ to donate school supplies for needy

T.J. Ohm and Genevieve Ohm used their ‘chore money’ to each donate a backpack filled with school supplies for the Red Lion Area Community Service pantry’s ‘Back-to-School’ program in August.

Donations sought for West York BARk’s Needy Pet Drive

The fourth annual Needy Pet Drive for BARk in West York has begun. Items needed include cat food; cat litter; dog food; toys for cats and dogs; leashes; collars; blankets; towels; and food for gerbils, rabbits and birds.

Donations can be dropped off through Dec. 21 at 43 N. Clinton St., West York.

The items will be delivered Dec. 22 to those in need. Residents in need of food for their pets should call Shelley Metzler at 717-880-2957.

Donate a car, help seniors

Given up driving? Have a car you no longer drive? No matter the reason you no longer use your car, you can get a tax deduction for donating it to Jewish Family Services of York.

As long as the car has an engine, and you have the title, JFS’ service will come get it for free. Proceeds from the sale of the vehicle will benefit JFS’ senior program.

JFS helps seniors of all faiths in York with such programs as Wise Options, which helps families find resources to cope with the challenges of aging, and Staying Connected, an essential transportation program for seniors who don’t drive.

To donate your car, call 877-JFS-4-CAR. Make sure they know it’s for the program in York.

Otterbein UMC offers discount food program

Otterbein United Methodist Church of Spry, 50 School St., York Township, continues to participate in the Share discount food program.

Food packages worth $35 to $40 may be purchased for $21 or less. Share offers a wide variety of meat packages, a veggie package and holiday packages, as well as farm-fresh produce during the summer months.

Two hours of volunteer service a month qualifies anyone to buy these groceries. The next sign-up and purchase date will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.[rha: September 8: ] Pick-up will be 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 22.

Volunteer training set for Lutheran Home Care & Hospice

Lutheran Home Care & Hospice will provide a volunteer training program 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13, 20 and 27 at Shrewsbury Lutheran Retirement Village, Zimmerman Place, 800 Bollinger Drive, Shrewsbury, PA.

This volunteer training program is provided at no charge, but registration is required. Individuals with prior hospice experience are welcome to apply and a full training will not be necessary. Training will focus on the hospice philosophy of care and the role of the hospice volunteer in hospice care.

Volunteers will assist and support those living with a terminal illness and their families by providing emotional support to the clients and their families, relief and respite to caregivers and by being a friend when companionship is needed most.

Gavin gives gifts to SPCA

CPAA seeks dog trainers for its HOPE Dog programs

The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance is seeking professional dog trainers to fill several key positions in its HOPE Dog training, rehabilitation and adoption programs. CPAA sponsors four programs under the HOPE Dog umbrella: HOPE, Helping Hounds, Pawsitive Alternatives and Golden Paws. Each program is geared toward working with member rescues to help their dogs find a second chance for a happy ending.

“Our programs have grown significantly over the last few years and we are helping more animals than ever before,” said Zella Anderson, founder and director of CPAA. “In a system that is already overwhelmed, rescues need all the assistance we can offer to help give every dog another chance at the life they’ve always deserved.”
