"Earth to Cal"
What alternative universe does Cal Thomas live in? He says that Bush can be “eloquent in his delivery” of his speeches and that the President is “too nice” to stand up to those awful Democrats and the Left in general. Thomas goes on to say that “The Left (his emphasis) has no strategy for victory, only defeat.”
Come back to Earth Cal. George W. Bush pushed us into this crazy war in Iraq, and redirected funds and manpower away from efforts to upend Al Qaida, secure our ports and harden our infrastructure. He ran roughshod over a spineless Congress, and has pretty much continued to push Congress until Congress decided to push back.

As for his “eloquence” and being “too nice” a Bush smirk-a-thon, performed in front of a canned audience hand picked by his handlers hardly warrants Thomas' placing Bush among the likes of FDR, JFK, Reagan and Churchill. Maybe Bush and Tony Blair could change places for a week, allowing our “eloquent” President to stand before the House of Commons and defend his policies, without a teleprompter, before an angry group of MP’s.
As to the canard that only the “Left” is against the war, and has no plan for victory, let me pose two questions to Mr. Thomas and let me offer an observation. First, Cal, would you be carrying on this Presidential love-fest if the screw ups and lies of the past six years had occurred during a Gore Presidency? Or would you be calling for his head, demanding accountability for the blood and treasure squandered in Iraq? Second, what does victory in Iraq look like? I have heard nothing from the President that spells out the nature of victory other that the idea that the Iraq military will stand up as America stands down. Will that mean another 100,000 dead Iraqis, or 10,000 dead American soldiers, or billions more dollars, poured into an Iraqi civil war? What side do we support in the civil war? As Jeffery J. Brown wrote in a letter to the editor published the same day as Thomas’ piece “So, now we’re fighting both the guys trying to kill us and the guys who want to kill the guys trying to kill us?.........We’re like a man fighting bees.”
Last, I would note that some of the loudest voices against the war have been Conservative... Back in 2003 and 2004, when the Democrats we’re cowering in the congressional coatroom, people like Pat Buchanan, Ron Paul, Chuck Hagel, Scott Ritter and former Reagan Treasury appointee John Paul Roberts, were all questioning the war, and the lies that got us there. More recently, card-carrying conservatives like George Will and Rep. Walter “Freedom Fries” Jones (R-NC) have spoken loudly against the war.
The truth is that people from all political backgrounds believe this war is the greatest mistake our nation has made in a very long time.
