Making educated choices
As our primary election approaches, it is time to examine issues, look at facts, and make educated choices. The key word in this statement is “educated”. There are many issues to consider in our local and county elections this year. I urge voters to review facts, seek reliable information, and not succumb to emotional and inflammatory comments that we so often see in our editorial comments.

One of the most important issues facing us on a county level is growth management. As York County continues to grow, we need to wisely plan for the future. We should all be clearly aware of the amount of growth going on in every corner of our County. All you need do is drive through your own neighborhoods and look at the housing developments blossoming everywhere. Growth is inevitable, and if properly managed can be positive for the County. But, it must be managed.
Educated decisions have to be made to ensure that our infrastructure is capable of dealing with that growth. There must be a balance between neighborhoods, open space, and the services necessary to support the people moving here. It is imperative that York County develops a strategic plan to balance our growth. We need to urge our 72 municipalities and 16 school districts to work together to economize services and manage development in their municipalities.
Two of our current County Commissioners, Lori Mitrick and Doug Kilgore, have recognized the importance of making educated choices. They have recognized the positive and negative impacts of population growth in our County. They have made educated decisions on managing that increased growth to ensure that there is a balance of land use in our County. I encourage all voters to support these responsible County Commissioners for re-election so that a working strategic plan may be developed for our County that may benefit the quality of life here for decades to come.
