Mitrick supports well-being of senior residents

The well being of our seniors is a matter I hold close to my heart. Today, approximately 70,000 York County residents are over the age of 60. I'd like to comment on two important issues.

SENIOR CENTERS. I support the community senior centers and have been active in numerous measures to bring stability and success to the programs. However, it is important to note that each center is a private/non-profit entity. The York County Agency on Aging simply serves as the conduit for the distribution of State and Federal dollars dedicated to support senior transportation and community and in-home services. Recently the need for in-home services has increased, thus it was imperative that the allocation of available dollars shifts accordingly. Though the news of the redistribution of dollars was initially met with some concern, we have already seen positive results. Public, private and faith-based groups have energized to provide further support to the senior programs throughout the county. I am working with these community partnerships to meet the changing needs of our older population.

YORK COUNTY NURSING HOME. We performed our required due diligence by considering the privatization of the Nursing Home. With all factors considered, I continue to strongly support maintaining our Nursing Home as a county-run program. We have an excellent medical/social model that provides outstanding care to hundreds of York County residents. I am extremely proud of the dedication and professionalism of the administration and staff who work daily to bring comfort to those who call our program "home." Recently, we authorized a long-term commitment for the renovation and modernization of the facility.

My obligation to our growing senior population is steadfast. The senior centers and the York County Nursing Home are gems in our community and I am committed to their continued success.

President, York County Board of Commissioners
