Street fair questions answered
This letter is in response to “Stagger Booths At Street Fair,” submitted by Penny Bowers and printed in last Monday’s edition of the York Daily Record. As the contracted event coordinator for the Olde York Street Fair and other large-scale special events for the City of York, I wanted to address Penny’s concerns raised in the letter with regard to vendor placement on one side of the street for the majority of the festival area.

In 2004, the City of York changed the layout of the Olde York Street Fair to be in compliance with Americans for Disabilities Act, so that all our community members could have full access to the event and travel through the Street Fair unimpeded. When the craft and food vendors lined both sides of Market Street the entire length of the event, it blocked access to sidewalk wheelchair ramps and did not leave a clear walking path that is required by the ADA. The Street Fair Committee now places vendors so there is a walking path and access to the sidewalks throughout the event, causing some portions of East and West Market Street to be open and without vendors. This way it is a fun, safe tradition for all visitors to enjoy.
The Street Fair Committee and the City of York would like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of people who attend our Olde York Street Fair, as well as the many volunteers that help make the event such a success each year. We welcome your comments and questions about this and any other City of York events at our email, events@yorkcity.org, or by contacting us at 717-849-2217.
