Send Marylanders early warning

| | Comments (1)

Over the last few months I've read many complaints about the folks moving to York County from
Maryland. This is not the only local newspaper that has published rants about the Maryland migration. The other local paper published an interview with one woman who refered to them as Balti-morons because the new residents didn't change their car license tags immediaetly to PA tags.

Those of you who are angry about Marylanders moving to your precious county are complaining to the wrong newspapers. If you want to help stop the "invasion," maybe you need to let the people of Maryland know how you feel. You need to write letters to be published in MD newspapers and let them know how unwelcomed they will be if they move to Pennsylvania. You should contact the Baltimore Sun, The Jeffersonian in Baltimore Co. and the Aegis newspaper
in Harford County. It's only fair that Marylanders know how miserable and angry you are, and that they too will have an unhappy life in York County. Flood those newspapers in MD and tell them many York County residents drive like maniacs and their lives are in danger here. They deserve to know that there are so many hit and run crashes here that the police don't even bother to investigate.

It's time to warn those Marylanders even thinking about crossing the Mason Dixon line that they are not wanted. They deserve to know before making the big move. I only wish I had known before I moved here 5 years ago, from Maryland.

I'm really sorry you feel that way Ms. Swift. I've lived in York County for more than 20 years and have never experienced feeling like I was not wanted by the "natives."

I've found, however, that the majority of people who move to the area from Maryland tend to keep all their ties to the Baltimore area. They usually want all the same services and conveniences they had south of the border and they want their government to work the same way. They still subscribe solely to the Baltimore Sun, and generally don't have any idea what's going on locally, except what their neighbor has told them. I state these things from personal observations and I know that not all "transplants" have the same sad experiences that you have had.

Please, feel free to write a letter to the editors of the Baltimore papers. Let everyone know that PA is not the same as MD and to expect things to be different when they move - don't expect the farmer down the road to stop farming because you can't have a cookout because of the smell (or the flies!). Read the LOCAL papers, find out what is going on in your community, take an interest in something other than how much you hate it here. You might find that people will welcome you.
