Who would Jesus forsake?
True reform comes only when/ if we are willing to look at the root cause of a problem.
I believe (as many others do) that the root cause of the current immigration crisis is the passage of unjust trade agreements such as NAFTA. After we passed NAFTA and flooded Mexican markets with cheap, U.S. government subsidized products, Mexican farmers were thrown into bankruptcy. (That means U.S. taxpayers are paying for larger profits for multi-national corporations that do not pay their fair share of taxes.)

Therefore, it seems logical to me that the first part of immigration reform lies in rescinding NAFTA and paying reparations to the Mexican farmers. This would allow them to stay in Mexico, living with their families in their own communities -- which is what they desire.
To imply that Mexican people want to cross a border where they may be murdered, risk their lives crossing a daunting desert where many die from dehydration, just to live and work in a country where they feel despised, while being separated from their family and culture -- well this is ludicrous!
Real reform begins with addressing the root cause. Who among our people in Congress will be brave enough to work for true reform?
Who would Jesus put out of work for the sake of larger profits?

NAFTA may well be one cause of illegal Latin American immigrants, but hardly the only one. The "giant sucking sound" which Ross Perot warned of before it was passed was partially American jobs going to Mexico (e.g. Hershey), but is also accompanied by the sound of our "amigos criminales" coming here to do the jobs Americans won't do. But in a global economy we must adapt with fair free trade policies, and WWJD is not and should not be the question in corporate boardrooms.
To the rev. sandra mackie, have your heard of the difference between church and state??????
