Strand exposure

| | Comments (2)

Kudos to Bill Swartz and the Strand Capital for taking the initiative to listen to the under 45 crowd and bring better programming to the Strand for this age group.

I recently attended the Strand's showing of the movie Waitress and I agree with Mr. Swartz when he stated that once people have been exposed to the beauty of the Strand, they will fall in love with it and want to see it prosper for years to come. The Strand is part of our history and we need to do everything we can to support it and ensure its viability. There is programming room for everyone and I would 100% support this initiative Mr. Swartz is recommending.

Cat therapist too wishy-washy

| | Comments (0)

With interest, I read this piece about cat behavior, and was both sorry and surprised at the wishy-washy stand of Carole Wilbourn about "declawing" cats. Instead of saying that avoiding it is a good idea, she should have said that it is animal cruelty of the first magnitude for which there is never any justification for inflicting!

Who's an idiot?

| | Comments (0)

In his letter published in the York Sunday News on October 28, Dave Workman confirms my hunch that he doesn't have a very high regard for the truth. Contrary to what he says, I did not suggest in an article published in the York Daily Record on October 7 that he is "an idiot for refuting the lame argument that more police are killed by gunfire than any other cause." He didn't refute the argument, it's not a lame argument, and I didn't suggest that he's an idiot -- I asked whether he's an idiot or a shrewed propagandist who thinks that newspaper readers like you are idiots.

Dream Act S. 2205

| | Comments (1)

It would interest me greatly as I’m sure many others, why you would a U.S. Senator, would vote in favor of the Dream Act S. 2205. What is it about the word illegal don’t some in Washington understand? Why would they want to give financial aid to a person who number one doesn’t belong here, and two, what makes you think they won’t default on their student loans and either move back to their homeland, or lose themselves again in society leaving the burden of the cost on the backs of legal residents and taxpayers?

Water shortage

| | Comments (0)

Whiskey is for drinking; water is for fighting over." It has been said this can be attributed to Mark Twain.

True or not, it does seem like this is what is happening to some parts of this country when we hear of states suffering with a lack of rain fall. When people in American are suffering, we all suffer.

PIO training

| | Comments (0)

I read in the paper that the Office of Emergency Management has hired a new Public Information and Training Officer. It stated that he had been a tv reporter for the past 8 years and prior to that a chemical tech for Kodak. OK I can understand that his tv experience would make him a great candidate for a PIO, but what kind of training will he be giving and who will be receiving this training?

Adopt a pound pet

| | Comments (0)

I am writing this letter to encourage all people to adopt a loving pet from a shelter or rescue. By doing so, you'll not only be turning your back on the commercial dog breeding industry, you'll also be saving a precious life.

To all breeders . . . there are thousands of unwanted animals in shelters and rescues. Go find a job and earn your money like everyone else has to. Shame on you for breeding animals for profit.

Tethering creates aggression

| | Comments (0)

As a dog trainer, I get frequent calls from current and former clients about dogs that are being tethered in the owner’s yard for extended periods of time.

I've seen a lot of these pitiful situations firsthand. Many times, a dog spends his life tethered to a short chain, which limits his ability to move around, in a yard without adequate shelter, food or water.

Bring back discipline

| | Comments (1)

Fred Battles nailed the underlying cause of our youth crime problem in his letter, "Good parenting prevents crime," Oct. 26. Corporal punishments fell into disrepute in 1975 because of The Mondale Act, Senate Bill #1191, PL 93-247. With little meaningful discipline, more and more children are turning to the terrible antisocial lifestyle of drugs, crime and irresponsible sex.

Not my statistics?

| | Comments (0)

I do not intend to get into a protracted debate with Edward Waxman
concerning gun control, it would be a complete waste of time, Mr. Waxman
lives in a world where all you need to control crime is to pass another law
restricting the rights of the law-a-biding. I have found that you can't
reason with people that live there. I live in the real world where the
definition of a criminal is someone who would not obey the law Mr. Waxman
would want passed.

Can't fight City Hall

| | Comments (1)

You know, doing the right thing shouldn't be that difficult. But then, you can't fight City Hall.

During the night of the Dallastown Halloween Parade, five of us had our vehicles towed. We had parked on a section of East Maple Street that the borough posted with temporary no-parking signs.

Why did we park there? Laziness? Selfishness? Because we are criminals intent on thumbing our noses at authority?

Support for Snyder family

I want to show my support for Albert Snyder and his family. I live in Topeka Kansas and am exposed to the Westboro Baptist Church and their filthy signs and harassment of people who pass by that do not share their beliefs.

Good luck on your lawsuit. I hope it will be the first of many won against this organization. Grief is hard enough without this type of demonstration going on. This family consists of a bunch of lawyers so they can fight on for a long time.

Leave the students alone

| | Comments (21)

I read the article about the so called rally at vo-tech. that story is incorrect. there was not a ralley it was the same people wearing the same clothes and driving the same vehicals. Dr. kraft does not tell the truth when it comes to the whole story. the artical failed to mention the fact that on thursday they school decided to bring in tow trucks during lunch and tow and truck or car that had any confederate attair on it. To me taking kids out of class to remove a symbol on their truck is worse than tthey having it on their. This whole confederate thing is dump if a school because out of control thats on thing if not leave the students alone. The confederate flag is a symbol of pride to those who faught and the civil rights they wished. Alot of races faught in that war for the south, which seems to be forgotten. It is not races until someone makes it racial. Not every southern person believed in slavery. if this symbol is banned because someone thinks its races then everything that bothers someone should be banned to. Your being offensive to those who have pride in that flag. i wish that the artical would have expressed those thoughts. and about the school facts need to be straightened out.

Increasing bias

| | Comments (17)

How often do we hear about the "objectivity" of the main stream media, it's neutral positions and lack of an agenda? My skepticism in recent years has grown by leaps and bounds as I note the increasing bias in the news and in particular, our own home town newspaper, The York Daily Record.

In the last few months we have been treated to multi page stories extolling the virtues of unwed mothers, the glories of homosexuality and the tribulations of brave illegal aliens. This weekend we were treated to front page stories of a bar owner holding a political rally for a comedian and a haunted house in Wrightsville.

Rush Limbaugh raised over $4,000,000 for the families of the bravest and most selfless members of our society (MILITARY) and not a peep. Your omission speaks volumes!

Vandals must pay

| | Comments (1)

I hope the vandals that toppled the tombstones and vandalized the playground equipment don't just get a handslap. It's time the parents and their kids are held responsible. They should be made to pay for the damages by any means possible. Give the kids community service to do. I'm sure the church could use their help next year mowing and triming the cemetery. Maybe then they will learn to respect other people's property, something their parents never taught them.

Flawed essay

| | Comments (3)

In a beautiful essay, Lori Borgman tackles a dilemma that is faced by all who now see the Iraq invasion as a tragic mistake. She takes the position that every parent of a young man or woman in the military has a right to be proud, and she is correct.

Today, nearly everyone accepts that these armed forces personnel did not declare war against Iraq, that they are doing what every member must do which is to obey orders, that they have proved themselves to be well trained, highly skilled, and possessing of high morale, and with few
exceptions, well disciplined. Could anything more be asked of our military? Major mistakes have been made, but these failures can be traced right to the top, where the deciders are all civilians.

You go to the Historical Society's Oyster Fest and get really, really upset when they serve fried oyster sandwiches with sesame seeded hamburger buns. Hot dogs go with hot dog rolls, hamburgers go with hamburger buns and fried oysters go with oyster rolls. Yorkers take their traditions and food seriously. Don't mess with the food and assume no one will notice. I noticed. I was not happy. I'm sure the colonists didn't have sesame seeded buns with their oysters. If oyster rolls were good enough for our ancestors they should be good enough for us. Please, bring back the oyster rolls.

Many individuals and public officials say the land should be preserved, despite having no funding for it. If this land becomes developed, place the blame on Commissioner Candidate Marty Qually, and the senior leadership of No Casino Gettysburg.

Chronister's crime bill

| | Comments (0)

“Seventy-nine percent of the county’s general fund is spent on crime and punishment?”

Steve Chronister says, “The county [to fight crime] could hire anywhere from 50 to 150 people, and the cost would likely reach into the millions.”

As seems to be normal in our society these days, we are attacking the crime problem at the wrong end. Why not teach children respect for authority while they are young? It should be a simple thing to do, and certainly should not cost millions!

The problem is that we have tied the hands of both parents and teachers who are the first authority figures in a child’s life. We have forgotten that a child sometimes needs a hug when doing well, or when hurting. We’ve made laws that forbid touching a child when it would do the most good. Sometimes a simple swat would help direct a child in the right direction. That seems also to be forbidden to teachers, parents, and caregivers.

School and contraceptives

A school in Maine has started to pass out contraceptives in an effort to slow down teen pregnancy and STD's. Though their intentions may seem good it is alarming that the students can receive "treatment" from the school's health center without the parents being informed of the type of treatment.

When entering the cafeteria at Red Land High School you will notice long lines leading up to the food station, and crowded areas of students. There are normally four lines and four registers to check out of. In the recent 2-3 weeks at Red Land there are 3 lines with 2 registers. This makes it extremely difficult to get lunch on time without being late.

Enough is enough

| | Comments (4)

There comes a point where we have to say, “enough is enough”. We need to remind our elected officials that they are representatives of us, “We the people”. Enough fighting! Enough of ‘what about me?’, and more of ‘what about my country?’. Somewhere in the past fifty years the behavior we normally wouldn’t have even tolerated has become mainstream. People at all levels of society are fighting. We see it in our government, our workplaces, our schools, churches and in our families. It’s all being fueled by our media. News has become tabloid tv, reality shows are thriving on our ability to destroy one another. Internet has made it possible for anything to become an influence on our society, without any accountability. People are sue happy bringing frivolous lawsuits under the guidance of hungry get rich attorneys. In our ‘what about me’ world, who is saying ‘enough is enough’? We should be.

All choked up

| | Comments (2)

A few weeks ago I paid my school property taxes for the current year. I choked a bit writing the check, realizing that in the seven years since I retired, those school taxes had doubled. Since the concept of cost containment is unknown to the educational establishment, the only hope for relief seems to rest with our legislators to come up with more bucks. That seems as unlikely to happen as expecting that they will deal with our deteriortating roads and bridges or overhaul the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code, arguably the worst enabling legislation for community development in the nation.

Grumpy or just a bully?

We all know "community Columnist" Jeff Klinedinst to be a blindly partisan ideologue with a penchant for parroting Rush Limbaugh. In his Oct. 7 column (Things that make grumpy old men grumpy) we learn something else about the man. It seems that Jeff is a bully on the road. Responsible government at any level begins with those elected being actively involved in the community. I have talked to County Commissioners Lori Mitrick and Doug Kilgore at the York County Parks volunteer picnic, Master Gardeners dinner, Watershed Weekend, and Rail Trail Authority ground-breakings. The Library Board, Veterans events, the Farm Bureau and the Office of Aging events are regularly attended by Commissioners Kilgore or Mitrick. They are not there just for the photo opportunities. They are actively listening to their constituents, and involved in the issues facing the County.

It’s been sometime since I have written to comment on various issues, because I continue to be very frustrated with the lack of “quality of life” changes that has not occurred in York City or York County, despite the ongoing effort of various individuals, groups and organizations. It’s not because the community has not been involved, it’s because the obstacles of change are so entrenched in this community, government, business and social community that making changes difficult is impossible.

SS needs changes

| | Comments (0)

My wife just passed away and I tried to get social security death benefits. She had worked througout her life paying taxes and social security.

Later in her life she had medical problems and was in a home recieving SSI benefits until her passing. I was denied the benefits because she hasn't earned enough hours in the past years she was disabled.

I asked what about all the years she worked and paid social security? That doesn't count or matter. There is something definitely wrong with this system and needs to be changed when a person pays into social security and can't even get the death benefits.

Issue of fairness

| | Comments (5)

I was shocked (but not surprised) at the callous nature of the Sept. 30 editorial. For me, the Lauxmont eminent domain issue has always been about money. But more importantly, it has been an issue of fairness.

I would not feel sorry for the Kohr family if the County offered fair market value for their land from the beginning. The bankruptcy attorney knew it was not fair. ‘Realtor/Developer/Commissioner’ Steve Chronister knew it was not fair. Real estate is his vocation. At least offer a fair price. We are fortunate to have someone with his expertise in office. Fellow Commissioners Lori Mitrick and Doug Kilgore didn’t listen. The rest of the MANY Mitrick/Kilgore mistakes are well documented. Well intentioned or not, we are paying the price.

The York County Retirement Board met on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 10:35 a.m., with Commissioner Reilly presiding, on his last day in office.

Controller Gingerich made a motion to adopt the elective provisions of Act No. 43 of 2003 amending the County Pension Law, Act 96 of 1971 to move from the 1/60th Class to the 1/50th Class and to apply the provisions of the 1/50th Class retroactively to each employee’s credit service effective immediately. The motion passed three to two with Commissioner Reilly, Commissioner Donahue, and Controller Gingerich in favor and Commissioner Glass and Treasurer Bair opposed. No actuary study was carried out to assess the cost of this move to York County taxpayers! The change was not discussed in public. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m.

In that five- minute meeting, pensions for York County employees were increased, costing the County $2,700,000 for 2007 alone. Is that being fiscally conservative, as Chris Reilly claims to be! I don’t think so. Chris Reilly directly benefits from this llth-hour change to the pension plan.

The superintendent dismisses exit interviews as inaccurate, while the school board president states that he is not surprised by the responses.

I would like to reply to a letter printed in the commentary on September 22nd. in which the writer made the statement that "(President Bush) whose only remaining base of support is among the small demographic group of white males with IQs at his low level or even lower." The letter goes on in the same way but I just want to say that I am a white female -- fairly high intelligence, loyal Republican, and supporter of our president. I know there are many others in this "demographic group" who are in agreement with me.
