Chronister's crime bill
“Seventy-nine percent of the county’s general fund is spent on crime and punishment?”
Steve Chronister says, “The county [to fight crime] could hire anywhere from 50 to 150 people, and the cost would likely reach into the millions.”
As seems to be normal in our society these days, we are attacking the crime problem at the wrong end. Why not teach children respect for authority while they are young? It should be a simple thing to do, and certainly should not cost millions!
The problem is that we have tied the hands of both parents and teachers who are the first authority figures in a child’s life. We have forgotten that a child sometimes needs a hug when doing well, or when hurting. We’ve made laws that forbid touching a child when it would do the most good. Sometimes a simple swat would help direct a child in the right direction. That seems also to be forbidden to teachers, parents, and caregivers.

We’ve tried desperately to outlaw the Ten Commandments lest a child learn that lying, stealing, murder, impure morals, and parental disrespect are wrong. The result is that the first authority the child runs into is our police force.
Most weeds are better controlled by getting at the roots. But we seem to think that the proper thing to do is to add more police, more jails, more surveillance cameras, more school guards, and a host of other things to accomplish what should have been accomplished years ago, while the child is in his formative years. It is small wonder that teachers are frustrated, and working in a dangerous place.
Let’s restore sanity and safety to the root of our problems and keep our taxes in control!
