Health care not the best

|

If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound? Likewise, if we as a country have the best doctors, but more and more Americans can not afford to see them, can we really claim to have the best healthcare system in the world? We need to find a solution to this dilemma soon. Seventeen percent of our employed citizens have no healthcare (USA Today “cover story” 11/13). How does that make us look next to “communist” counties like Great Britain, Germany and Canada? Who, believe it or not, have well trained and motivated healthcare providers.

Mr. Tyson (“Want Communist Care?” 11/14) has fell victim to the Republican Propaganda Machine. Who constantly chant to their viewers and listeners “We have the best healthcare!”.

I guess the more you say or hear a lie the more likely you are to believe it. To counter Mr. Tyson’s assertion that changing our healthcare system would disastrous, I offer the following rebuttals.

First, increased taxes could/would be countered by employees no longer having to pay monthly premiums, meet deductibles, or co-pays. Employers would also make out as they would no longer have to pay for their employees healthcare. Perhaps this could also persuade US companies to stay put, rather than move operations overseas.

Mr. Tyson also spoke of long lines at emergency rooms. I agree, more people would seek medical attention. However, it would be a result of patients not having to choose between medicine and food. I would think in the greatest country on Earth, that would be viewed as a good thing.

Mr. Tyson and others are correct that our current system does a lot to foster medical research and development. However, we must look at new ideas that can provide healthcare to everyone. Socialized medicine may not be the silver bullet, but it deserves a better evaluation than the ignorant and outdated “Commy” label. Our citizen’s health ought to be a right, not a privilege! That’s not communism, it’s common sense.
