Teens' day deflated
On Monday, November 12, the Central York High School football team was featured on the Today Show for their efforts to help Tucker Haas, a 7-year-old boy fighting cancer. Having adopted Tucker as one of their own in 2005, the team has become known as “Tucker’s Team” and Tucker has been an important part of all they have accomplished. Helping Tucker has truly been more important than winning to these kids.

To show their support for Tucker and their friends on the football team, 40 plus Central York seniors chartered a bus on their own and traveled to New York to be part of the Today Show audience on the plaza. Arriving at 4:30 a.m., it was an exciting adventure and seeing their collective enthusiasm touched many hearts. In a day where so much of the press about teens is negative, it was heart warming to see a group of kids concerned about helping someone in need. As a parent of one of the students, I was so proud of the kids and their efforts!
Sadly, upon arriving back in York later that afternoon, they found that all of their cars (20+) had been towed from the parking lot at Manchester Crossroads — what a deflating way to end a great day! Parking their cars there was truly a mistake. Nobody gave it a thought. To get their cars out of impound, each student had to pay $145. A huge amount of money for a group of high school seniors! When asked if they would reduce the amount due to the circumstances, In Town Towing Service was unconcerned and unwilling to negotiate. So disillusioning to everyone involved in light of the events and purpose of the day! York can and should do better than this.

Whitney, I am with you on the fact that Central is doing a great thing for little Tucker. I watched the Today show just to see the clip. I am a Central grad and am very moved by this entire Tucker story. However, in view of the recent circumstances surrounding that shopping centers parking lot and the fact that there are no trespassing signs posted, I can understand why the cars were towed. I do believe the full amount of $145 should be payed. I do wonder if the students who went to New York were "skipping" school the day this was on air. If they had permission to go why could they have not just parked at the high school?
