Time for change

| | Comments (0)

Congratulations to Rep. Eugene DePasquale for his attempt to reduce property taxes. But wouldn't you know it, the Pennsylvania School Boards Association is against it. It seems that any time a program is proposed that takes power away from the local school board they fight it. These boards are elected but have little, or no accountablitity to those who elect them. They set a budget and then tax the district homeowners to meet the budget. Perhaps it is time to change the whole process. Why not add 1/2% to the state tax to be used for education and let the state parcel out the money as needed and stop local school boards from setting the school tax related to property? Let the school boards deal with education and the state deal with funding.
