Unionized workers too comfortable

| | Comments (5)

I'd like to comment on Clark Ruppert's letter on unions. Mr. Ruppert, at one time unions were a great idea, they helped uneducated workers in horrible, unsafe conditions, earning extremely low pay with little to no legal protection. Unions have served workers well by helping them avoid being exploited by employers however the time I'm talking about is the early to mid 1900's. In todays competitive markets unions now help workers exploit employers making union-made products so expensive and sub standard that sales are lost to superior less expensive foreign competitors and nonunion producers. Unionized American workers have become so comfortable and protected that they lose the incentive to work hard for their employer. It's not the total misconception that most companies are going to foreign countries because they work for pennies it's that they put in a fair days work for a fair wage much like this countries nonunion companies both producing a far better product at a much cheaper price.

At a young age I worked for a union shop and was appalled and offended by how my so called “union brothers and sisters” were driven by greed and petty requests not caring about what they were hired for... the job at hand. The company did what they could to meet all the ridiculous demands under threat of strike and eventually closed their doors. There are other
companies here in York that have and will go through the same thing, one for example that was just in the head lines, however I will not mention them for fear of losing the point I'm trying to make and turning this into a muck throwing contest. They know who they are and will soon be looking for another job.

In conclusion Mr. Ruppert I understand why you wrote your letter and by no means am I addressing your political agenda and your misinterpretation of the London School of Economics study. I'm addressing the fact that there is no need for unions anymore, they
are the reason for the steep fall of American industry and if we do not work to break them our country will never recover economically.

I agree something needs to be done about these unions. Yes amontel, they did help build this country but now they are like leaches sucking the life out of companies. CK is right you need to read the letter you are like most people quick to call them a name when you know you are wrong and your getting fat off of it or is it that you are not smart enough to understand. I really hate to see people like amontel make comments out of ignorance.

There still is a need for unions to figure out how to work cooperatively with management to maximize quality and produce goods which are competitvely priced, but I don't see any union which has done this. They are almost all stuck in the Industrial Revolution mindset which assures their extinction in a few decades if the don't wake up and adjust to the modern demand for quality and added value. Most unions workers are not worth the wages and benefits they have extorted and will be replaced by nonunion or foreign workers who deliver instead of whine.

Excuse me, but I haven't been reading about recalls of American made products, union or non-union. We are losing our good paying manufacturing jobs to foreign countries. But guess what? The ceos and big business keep getting richer and prices haven't really dropped. Isn,t that strange?
