Abortion, difficult and private decision
On the 35th Anniversary of Roe v Wade, January 22, it was very clear the point of view your editors took. Rather than presenting both sides of the issue; your newspaper chose to print the anti-choice column by the right winger, Cal Thomas.
Thomas would “empower” women by making it increasingly difficult to obtain an abortion; creating ever more hurdles to overcome before being allowed their rights.

He believes if abortion were illegal, we would have more US citizens to do the menial work at below minimum wage that illegal aliens are now doing. We limit illegal immigration by banning abortion and at the same time get cheap labor. What a selfish and arrogant assumption.
The Hollywood view he touts, glosses over abortion totally. There are only happy endings. “Juno” a very mature sixteen year old, with a wonderfully understanding family actually chooses her baby’s new family. In “Knocked Up” the pregnant woman, is bright, beautiful and accomplished. She is also perfectly happy to have a child with a dumb, irresponsible stranger. These are Hollywood fairy tales.
Happy endings will be few and far between when and if all abortions are banned. This, ironically, would probably be realized by a Supreme Court consisting entirely of men.
The federal government now works toward criminalization of abortion, and at the same time spent, so far, close to a billion dollars on “abstinence only” teaching in our schools. This program time and time again has been shown to be ineffective and can only cause more unintended pregnancies.
Women require the right to this very important, difficult and private decision. Whatever path is taken it should be theirs to follow.

Sandra, abortion is WRONG!! It is the killing of innocent babies! It needs to be illegal. If a woman does not want a baby then refrain from sex! Take birth control and if all else fails and they do get pregnant give the baby to a wondeful adoptive family who can take care and nurture this wonderful creation! The killing must stop!
