Guardian Angels
I have heard a great deal of controversy lately concerning the coming of the Guardian Angel group to York. Many seem to be dismayed that our city has become known for its crime rate to the extent that such a group would extend it's services to us. To all of those, I say wake up!
I moved to York in 1989 and have noticed the rapid increase in delinquency and violence. Perhaps it is time we take back what many of us have worked so hard to hold. How many of us are willing to take an evening walk alone anymore?

The Angels, contrary to some beliefs, are not a vigilante group. What they do is teach neighborhoods to police themselves effectively and safely. They have offered classes in self-defense and lessons on how not to be victimized. They educate, promote after school activities, and involvement in our neighborhoods. Things that should have never gone out of style, but seem obsolete at this moment in time.
I was living in New York when the "Angels" were created and within months there was a great improvement in the areas they helped, slowly it spread throughout the city and then country. Given their track record, I am amazed at the reluctance of our Mayor and a certain journalist to their offer to come here and form a chapter.
It is time for us to step up and be responsible for our own lives. Take back our streets from thugs, drugs, and disinterest. We have to become involved and better with a positive group then another gang.
