Free ride available to all

I'd like to comment on Stephen Frey's letter to the editor: In it, he made the following statement: churches are "getting a free ride as a non-profit business."

I've seen Mr. Frey's comments for more years than I care to think about. He is clearly not interested at this time in hearing about God and the good that churches provide in the community. I say, "at this time", because many people who profess to have no belief, suddenly re-think their outlook when faced with their impending death. Nevertheless, I offer the following for people who are not members of churches and might be influenced by his statements.

A profit is when something is sold for more than what it costs to provide. At our church, nothing is sold except for yard sale items once a year and they are contributed by members who pay taxes. The money from the sale is donated to local charities. Our members freely give money to support our pastor( and, by the way, pastors pay taxes on their income) and maintain our building. Among the "services" we provide to the community in center city are food, counseling, friendship and a place to be with God in a quiet, safe place. Our members come to the city from up to 25 miles away, and while here we support the York businesses by shopping and eating locally. The church is the people, not the building, not a business. As far as the "free ride", Mr. Frey, Christ, by his death on the cross for the sins of you, me and all of mankind, has already paid the price. Although none of us deserve it, you are welcome to partake of His "free ride" by just accepting Him as your savior.
