Pipeline route clarified

Your recent editorial on energy infrastructure in York County recognized Spectra Energy for its sensitivity in meeting with residents on its natural gas pipeline project. This is an important part of the development of our project - providing information, identifying issues and working together to address concerns. Throughout the permitting stages through to construction and operations, we will continue these efforts to keep interested residents informed of the project.

As the editorial referenced, we are proposing to place the pipeline within the existing utility corridor. Following comprehensive environmental and engineering evaluations, we determined that this proposed route would minimize disturbances to residents, communities, and the environment in both Lancaster and York Counties. Also, as you indicated, we ensure that right-of-way restoration will be thorough.

We do wish to clarify that the route, as currently proposed, does not traverse Rocky Ridge County Park but, rather, is located approximately one and a half miles from the Park. Further, we expect to complete the Muddy Creek crossing within 24 hours, utilizing federal and state mandated procedures to minimize disturbance to the stream.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) exclusively authorizes the construction and operation of new interstate natural gas facilities. FERC will conduct a thorough review of the project, evaluating the need and locations for the proposed facilities and the impacts of the expansion.

In the coming weeks, we will request FERC initiate its Pre-Filing Process which provides stakeholders with an opportunity to review project-related information and identify issues before any permit applications are filed. We encourage everyone interested in the project to participate in the Pre-Filing Process and will advise stakeholders on how to share their comments and concerns.

We appreciate the interest in our project and look forward to working with all stakeholders. For more information, we may be reached toll-free at 800-831-0043.
