Society sets boundaries

Ben Timmins claims that citing Bible passages to argue against gay marriage is "poisonous" to our democracy. There's a real laugh. Sixty-one percent of voters in gay-friendly California voted to ban same-sex marriage, but gays convinced the California Supreme Court to overrule the will of the people. So I guess democracy is OK as long as your side wins, right Ben?

Mr. Timmins further states that government "relies solely on expert testimony, statistical data and quantitative information to create policy." Wrong. Prohibitions against public sex, prostitution, pornography on public television, polygamy, etc. have nothing to do with statistics; they reflect societal values. Society can establish the boundaries of morally acceptable behavior. So while gays have the right to be left alone, society is not compelled to grant such relationships special status.

Ben claims gays are "threatened." However, the true threat is against those who refuse to salute the gay flag. Last year four San Diego firefighters filed a complaint after being ordered to participate in a gay-pride parade. To make matters worse, they were sexually harrassed at the event. Then there is the case of Guadalupe Benitez, a California lesbian who is suing two doctors for their refusal (on religious grounds) to artificially inseminate her. Ms. Benitez subsequently found someone else to perform the procedure and now has twins. So her wishes were not denied. However, she has continued with the lawsuit, so that she can be sure to trample the religious liberties of those in the medical community.

And the list goes on-all in the name of "tolerance."
