Agree to disagree

One of the many things that I love about America is that everyone can have and
express their own opinions. We are allowed to disagree with one another. However, there are times when we must agree to disagree while finding common ground so that we can work together towards a shared goal. Senator Obama is the first politician that I have heard who applies this to the issue of abortion.

The pro-life and the pro-choice sides of this issue lie far apart on many points. We must agree to disagree on those points.

Senator Obama has found the common ground in this dichotomy. Both sides want to reduce the number of abortions that take place in the United States. We must unite and focus on achieving this shared objective.

Senator Obama believes that making abortions illegal will not achieve this goal. Abortions will continue to occur; they will just be done underground in much less sanitary and safe conditions with more dangerous side effects to the mother. This is what occurred in States where abortions were illegal prior to Roe v. Wade.

An alternative is to provide more education to our children so that they fully understand the consequences of their decisions. The majority of teenage pregnancies are planned, not accidental. With education, these teens can make better choices. With better access to safe and effective birth control, people of all ages can protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies. These steps will reduce the number of abortions that take place in the United States.

This is just one of the many reasons why I think that Senator Obama can unite this country back to greatness.
