Letter stirs memories
Ed Gambler's letter to Viewpoints (Nov. 2) about WSBA brought back some memories, which are about a generation earlier than his recollection of "Sports Talk" with Curt Hart, plus Gary Sutton, the Orioles and Penn State.
In the 1960s and early '70s, WSBA was, in my opinion, the best it ever was, very popular with young people and young adults with a great selection of current hit music.
The sports station in York at the time was WORK, which first went on the air in the 1930s and for which I worked from 1962 to 1974.
WORK broadcast Penn State, the Baltimore Colts, York High, York County and college bowl games in football; the Baltimore Bullets, York High and York County regular season and championship games in basketball; plus the Phillies, Orioles, All-Star games, World Series and county championships in baseball.
I joined George Trout in the local coverage in 1962 and continued the play-by-play after George left the booth to take over management of the station in 1967. At the games, I worked with many fine people, some of whom have since passed on. My main color partners were John Loeper and Dave Marino, but I also worked with Doc Daugherty, Jerry Dyer, Pete Kenee, Ken Kephart, Terry Myers, Bill Nicholas, Tim O'Neill, Tom Price and Steve Bentivegna, with an always steady Stan Deppen back at the studio controls.
New ownership changed the station call letters and went to an all-music format around 1973, so sports fans had to turn elsewhere.
It was quite a ride while it lasted. Thanks to all of you who shared it with me during those years.
