Stop speeding

| | Comments (0)

Every morning we wake up to news of more highway crashes, more injuries, more deaths. Speed is the one constant factor. When combined with drinking, distractions or anger, Speed is deadly. There are rules, speed limits, bright blinking signs, but they are only occasionally observed and only sporadically enforced. Why? Because, we all speed.

Our representatives in government speed. Governor Rendell has publicly admitted that he speeds. He's also promised to slow down. Police speed. A police officer passed my house the other day. No lights. No siren. He must have been moving at least 40 mph. The speed limit is 25.

Change is possible, but our representatives in government and law enforcement only act when there is a clear mandate from the people. And there is no mandate from the people. "Everybody does it, We all speed. "

Well, maybe we should stop, stop speeding, stop breaking the law. Maybe we should begin setting an example for our children. The near-by Commonwealth of Virginia is beginning to understand the possibilities. A friend was recently arrested for speeding on a Virginia road. He was arrested and will be doing community service in addition to paying a hefty fine to the Commonwealth. Virginia is getting serious and, along with making its roadways safer, is reaping a financial bonus for its coffers. Why can't Pennsylvania? Officials answer, "Because we don't have the laws, the cooperation, or the interest." It's sad and it's stupid. We waste gas; we waste money and each year we waste (according to AAA) at least 40,000 more lives.
