Wow--what a nice surprise awaited me at Penn St. Farmers Market yesterday, as more than 20 people showed up for a meeting to discuss how to "market the market" and to ensure a good future for this local treasure.
This was a group of volunteers interested in keeping this gourmet, bargain-rich shopping outlet filled with great vendors of farmers, craftsmen, bakers, and fishermen alive. And that's just the beginning of the offerings there.
In case I forgot to mention that these people, who aren't getting paid to do anything, consists of loyal customers, vendors, neighbors and history preservation buffs. And they weren't all talk, as people volunteered to actually DO things, not just form committees. In fact the committees are going to have to come later, there's work to be done NOW. Neighbor of the market Barb Smith, also happens to be a painter, and has offered to paint the inside of the market. Wha? Huh? I shrank as I thought of my complaints about helping to paint our family room. She seems like quite the firecracker, and I hope to get to know her better.
Believe me, it was exciting, and it was an honor to be in attendance. And don't worry, I'll be volunteering as well, but don't expect to see me on a ladder with a paintbrush!

Barb, wish I had realized it was "you" at the meeting. I was so excited to be there. Isn't it great?!

Barb - Great day at Farmers Market on Saturday. Irish Dancers entertained us with their high energy performance and folks were dancing in the aisles. Hope to have more entertainment in the future. We encourage anyone with ideas and/or talent to join our York Historic Farmers Market Association.
I heard from a reliable source that there is a good possibility that fresh watercress might make an appearance next week. Yummo !
Hi Barb - Sorry we missed you last week. Just to let you and your readers know that the farmers market website was updated today. Also, the Gift Certificate Program has started. Certificates for 10% off were distributed to a few neighborhood associations and churches this week. More to follow. Any input into the channels of distribution is welcomed. The certificates are good for 10% off a purchase up to $50 dollars at a single vendor. Signs are posted at participating stands, which include Sechrist Meats, Market House Deli, Ilyes Meats and Produce, Miller's Poultry and Produce, Sub Stand, Sweet Escapes Cupcake Bar and a few others that I can't quite remember at the moment. More vendors will be on the list later. Market Spring Cleaning is scheduled for April 16 - 9 am, and the painting day is April 23. Anyone interested in helping should email us at marketpenn@aol.com. Happy Weekend !
