Getting people to do stupid things

When I do career days at schools or talk to people about being a photojournalist, one of the basic questions I get asked a lot is, “What do you like best about your job?”
That’s pretty easy. I get to work in an ever-changing environment where I am encouraged to flex my creative muscles. When you work in a room of creative people, it’s a constant challenge to keep up.
Sometimes, I get to use this skill by making my fellow YDR office mates do stupid things.
York Daily Record reporter Bill Landauer does not like spicy food. I’ve eaten wings with him many times and it is difficult for him to even smell wings that might not agree with his stomach.
So, when this year’s Chili Cookoff at Sovereign Bank Stadium came around, I asked Bill to step out of his comfort zone and join me at the cookoff and try the spiciest chili we can find while I make a video about this.
Bill, who also blogs under the name “Captain Brown Shoes/Black Socks” looked at me and without hesitation, said, “Sure.”
Friends told him not to do it. Other friends told me he’d back out. To his credit, the captain hung tough. The video below offers his spicy experience and if you want to read about it from the horse’s burned mouth, he also writes about it in his blog.
