Eileen’s favorites of 2012

As an editor I don’t get out to shoot as much as the other photographers. I try to pick up some assignments on weekends and I fill in a lot when photographers are out or run on breaking news. I have to admit that I eagerly assigned myself to photograph dock dogs one Saturday. I had a great time trying to find the perfect moment as dogs jumped off a platform into a pool and I quickly learned that I needed to stay away from them as they shook off the water if I wanted to stay dry.

But later I decided to see what would happen if I didn’t turn away. I got down on the dog’s level and took a series of photos as his ears flopped back and forth. It was a bit of shot in the dark. With ears and water and fur flying I had no idea what I got, but I was excited to see the results. In the end I got a photo that makes me giggle every time I look at it.

My favorite video of the year came from the York Fair. I had some time to hang out at the fair and had a new video camera to test out. I always love all the noises you hear at the fair: the animals, kids laughing, barkers trying to get you to stop by their booth, so that’s what I tried to concentrate on.
