Last week I was sent to New Salem Elementary School for a story about peanut allergies and new state proposals. I’m not well versed in the way that schools deal with this potentially dangerous situation, but I have to say, I was real impressed with the precautions that are taken.
From getting the kids in line first so serving utencils are not contaminated, and making sure they have their own table that is constantly wiped down to having cafeteria staff trained in using EpiPen injectors, the school worked very hard to secure the safety of these kids.
Going into the cafeteria, I wasn’t sure exactly what I would be photographing, but it didn’t take long to figure it out once I met Colton and Hailey. Haily, who was by herself at first, came across as shy initially, but once we got talking about sour cream and onion Pringles potato chips, we were fast friends.
Then Colton sat down and the silliness began. The duo began giggling a lot and before I knew it, Hailey was leaning in toward Colon and looked like she was going to kiss him. The photo above is that moment.
“Are you gonna kiss him? Ewwwwww! He’s got cooties.” I said to the first grade girl after I took the photos.
“Noooo!! I’m just blowing in his face.” said Hailey.
“She is kissing me!” said Colton.
When all was said and done, the photo I ended up with may not have reflected the seriousness of the story, but it sure was adorable.
I’ll take it.
