Crossing paths with news at the right place and time is a gift that brings home a good spot news photo, but you can expand the circle of the right place and time by listening to the police scanner and thinking.

4 Most Memorable Videos of 2013
4 Most Memorable Videos of 2013

A few months can feel like only seconds. I was hired at the Daily Record in April and covered many stories in 9 months. Each day was something different, something new. In review, I made 29 videos that last from 44 seconds to 5 minutes. I complied my top 4 most memorable videos by me […]

Plotkin’s year end favorite photo and video
For for first time in over six months, Paul Miller holds the hand of his wife Shelly by using his myoelectric prosthesis at Ability Prosthestics and Orthotics on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Miller was struck with Streptococcus Pneumoniae on Sunday, Feb 3, 2013, which resulted in the amputation of his hands and feet.

Post by Jason Plotkin When we were asked to post our favorite photo and video from 2013, it wasn’t really a hard decision for me. Paul and Shelly Miller have had such an incredible impact on my year, that it was a no brainer that they would fill both the photo and video catagories for […]

I have many favorite photos during the year for many different reasons. A technical accomplishment, nice light, a great composition, the perfect moment and luck. I picked this photo because it combined a few of the elements that make me smile when I capture a fleeting moment.

How I almost spoiled Christmas for a 3-year-old boy
How I almost spoiled Christmas for a 3-year-old boy

Earlier today, I was assigned to photograph Santa and Mrs. Claus as they paid a surprise visit to a local veteran’s wife and young son. Once we all arrived in front of the house, the merry couple began unloading gifts and food from their van. The entire time, we could see Ayden, 3, pressing his […]

Early Navidad at a Puerto Rican family dinner
Early Navidad at a Puerto Rican family dinner

At our newsroom, we usually create special newspaper packages for Thanksgiving and Christmas that are a little different from our daily and Sunday centerpieces. For example, last year for Thanksgiving Day’s paper, each section front had an article featuring what certain people or organizations cherished. This past year, each section front had a different angle […]

Chris’s 2013 favorites

I love this picture for two reasons. First, kids eating ice cream is always a glorious thing to make pictures of, because they either completely devour it and make a mess, or they take their time and make a mess. And let’s face it, ice cream messes are the best messes. Second, it just screams […]

An ‘almost’ photo
A white barn is almost hidden by the snow near Emigsville in Manchester Township Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. Eileen Joyce - Daily Record/Sunday News

There’s a barn down the road from my house in Emigsville that I see almost every day. It’s a weathered white barn and in the spring the green leaves of trees pop up around it. In the summer it’s often obscured by corn, but it’s beautiful when fall arrives. The corn is brown, leaves are […]

Kate’s Favorites of 2013
John Hammack of York models for a drawing and anatomy class at the Art Institute of York Friday, November 16, 2012. Like many nude models, Hamm does this part time and has another job as a security guard. DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - KATE PENN

We do not publish photos of naked people in the newspaper. So when I was assigned to take photographs of a nude model, I knew I was in for a challenge. I had successfully photographed in an adult bookstore twice without showing inappropriate “toys”, but never when the subject himself was nude. There is nothing […]

Fearless
Kate Penn - York Daily Record/Sunday News

A few weeks ago I was told to start brainstorming for our basketball preview tab. The girl we were featuring was “fast and fearless”, according prep sports reporter Matt Goul. For the shoot, we decided to put her fearlessness to the test. I called up Ryan the Bugman and he agreed to bring a few […]

Show Stealer
Show Stealer

Charlie is a 10-year-old jack russell terrior, and an absolute ham. I met him photographing Charlie’s Christmas Corner at Charlie’s Produce & Crabs, which is named for him. I’m a sucker for dogs, and this guy definitely stole the show.
