I made my hair an easy DIY banana and yogurt smoothie

I used half of a banana and 1/4 cup of nonfat Greek yogurt for my hair smoothie.

I tore out a page from a women’s magazine sometime ago that featured recipes for do-it-yourself beauty products like facial masks and scrubs. Some of these recipes featured weird ingredients like pear juice and cold-pressed sunflower oil. Umm, nope. Not in my cupboards.

Tarte’s Smooth Operator Natural Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 covers without feeling heavy or looking fake

I decided to try out a tinted moisturizer after being told by an aesthetician that my skin was close to flawless and there was no need for me to wear a traditional foundation. (Personally, I don’t think my skin looks that good, but like most women, we can be our own worst critic.)

Art and fashion meet with Paperself eyelashes

I just got my weekly e-newsletter from Sephora and was totally intrigued by one paticular item on their hot list. The Paperself eyelashes are false eyelashes designed with intricate patterns inspired by the art of Chinese paper-cutting.

Some comments fellow co-workers shared with me after I showed them the Paperself eyelash products:

“They look uncomfortable.”

“How close would you have to look at someone’s eyes to notice them. Or would you just think they messed up their eye makeup application.”

“I’m not famous enough to wear them.”

“I’d try them out.” (That’s me, cause I’m a nut and I like try out weird things when it comes to fashion and makeup)

The eyelashes cost between $17-19 on Sephora.

Fruit-inspired jewelry an easy sell

As a teenager, I loved accessories — earrings, necklaces, hats, scarves, rings — anything that further personalized my style.

Real Fruit Jewelry

As an adult, I buy less jewelry, but I still appreciate creative pieces, and every now and then, I run into a must-have.

I was walking through Center City Philadelphia one Friday afternoon when I saw a table of produce-inspired earrings, necklaces and rings outside of an art gallery. The jeweler who owns Real Fruit Jewelry told me that she made each piece from fruits by covering them in resin.

It was a toss up between these earrings made from blood oranges and the strawberry earrings above.

I loved the way the light shined through the jewelry in bright reds, oranges and yellows. I also love produce. I checked out a pair of strawberry earrings that cost $25 and almost left them behind.

She said the jewelry is pretty durable unless it gets wet. Once the artist told me she could swipe my credit card on the street, I was sold. They were just too pretty to pass up.

Aveeno’s Nourish +Moisturize shampoo, conditioner and leave-in treatment work great

My hair is very dry since I bleached it about a month ago.

I recently touched up my roots, so my hair was dried even more because of the bleaching process.

I really needed a shampoo and conditioner to get me back some of the moisture I had lost through the bleaching process.

After reading almost every bottle label of shampoo and conditioner at Walgreens I chose Aveeno’s Nourish + Moisturize line. I also bought the leave-in treatment.

Product claims:
AVEENO® NOURISH+ MOISTURIZE — bathes the driest hair with a fusion of gentle conditioners and moisturizers, giving hair silky new life. Scientific studies show that just three washes helps repair damage, providing the three key elements that give hair life — strength, softness and shine.

This exclusive ACTIVE NATURALS® formula, infused with Nourishing Wheat Complex and Hydrating Oat Protein, is designed to feed your hair — replenishing moisture as it targets the weakest part of hair and fortifying the hair shaft with protein where it needs it most.

Developed with a team of experts, including a leading dermatologist and stylist, our ACTIVE NATURALS® formula harnesses the power of nature combined with advanced scientific methods and is shown to give you the beautifully strong, healthy — looking hair you desire and deserve. And, because it’s from AVEENO®, you can trust that it’s gentle on color-treated hair.

My take:
After one use my hair felt instantly softer to the touch.

I sprayed the the leave-in treatment on my towel dried hair and let my hair dry.

The real test came when I was able to run my fingers through my dry hair without getting them snagged in my hair.

I really can’t believe the difference just one shampoo and conditioner usage made to my hair.

Also would like to add that even though it has a lot of conditioning agents in the product it didn’t weigh my hair down at all and rinsed out nicely.

I really like the smell too.

I would recommend this to anyone who has dry or damaged hair.

Olay 2-speed facial cleansing brush product review

I just bought Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System facial brush for $29.99 at CVS.

It comes with a 2-speed brush and a small tube of the Exfoliating Renewal Cleanser.

I used it twice and really like it.

The bristles on the brush are soft, so it’s safe to use on sensitive skin.

It’s waterproof, so you can use it in the shower.

I have used it with other cleansers, not just Olay products.

Why a brush? It helps remove dirt and makeup effectively, leaving your skin ready to absorb other facial skin products better.

I decided to buy Olay’s spin brush over the Mia by Clairsonic because of the cost. The latter cost $149 which to me is a little costly, but I’ve read plenty of good reviews on the product, but I’m still not sure I want to pay that much for a facial spin brush. So for now I feel pretty satisfied with my Olay spin brush.

Beauty Tip:

Add baking soda to your favorite facial cleanser to create your own exfoliant. It works wonderful and leave your skin super soft. Don’t rub hard, let the baking soda do the work on your skin.

Creating Victory Rolls takes practice, patience and careful placement of hair pins

I always loved vintage fashion, especially the hairstyles.

After watching a dozen or so YouTube tutorials last night, I attempted to try Victory Rolls in my hair this morning before heading out to work.

Here are the results

Here’s how:
Step 1: Divide hair down the middle.

Step 2: Start on one side and gather front section of hair and hold up and tease the roots and spray with hair spray. Smooth the front hair.

Step 3: Still holding the hair, move your grip to the hair ends and start rolling hair. Pretend your rolling your hair around a hair roller.

Step 4: Secure the inside of the roll to head with hair pin.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 for other side.

Step 6: Take remaining back section of hair and roll it under and pin with hair pins.

Step 7: Spray entire head with hair spray.

My style icons: Retro celebs and Dita Von Teese

The bold brows of Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress in “The Seven-Year Itch,” the slim, gray pencil skirts worn by various Hitchcock blondes in “Vertigo” and “Rear Window” are just a few of my favorite fashion looks. Basically, I love old-school fashion, especially the fashion of the 1940s and 1950s. The clothing back then flattered a woman’s curves without being too over the top or revealing way too much.

Dita Von Teese

One of my current fave fashion idols is Dita Von Teese… when she’s not wearing tassels and spinning around in a giant martini glass that is, like she does at burlesque shows. At Hollywood events and premieres, Dita conjures up the glamor of days gone by with elaborate hairstyles and classic wiggle-style dresses. With her fair skin and ruby lips, the burlesque star actually kind of reminds me of “Gone with the Wind” star Vivien Leigh. I’ve even tried to copy one of Dita’s pin-up inspired hairstyles before. Read about my attempt here.

Vivien Leigh

For more casual looks, I also like the vintage-inspired styles of celebs like Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry. Flirty rompers and wedges are perfect for a day outdoors.

Vintage fashion is popular for a reason. The looks are basic enough that they won’t go out of style and they can be easily updated with a more modern accessory or something as simple as a hot-right-now lipstick shade.

Katy Perry

Are you in love with vintage style? Who are your favorite celebs that wear fashions from the past?

Add volume to fine hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic

Ever since I had my son about 7 years ago, my hair hasn’t been the same. The main problem is my hair is thinner. To counteract this I absolutely love Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic.

It’s a hairspray that you use after you towel dry your hair. Simply flip your head down and spray tonic into roots and then blow dry with your head still upside down. I use my hands instead of a brush when I blow dry my hair.

Why I love this product is because it adds volume without the stickiness and crunchiness of other sprays. I also like the light clean scent. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly throughout hair.

Cost: $15.00
