We need a few concerned citizens with a bit of time. One watches Intown, the others park at random intervals. When the tow truck approaches, the parker just drives off.
Perhaps a half-dozen of those incidents will reduce the lot owner's aggression to times when the lot is actually so full that it impedes customer access.
Well, let me tell you my story about towing. I parked my car in front of L. A. Fitness off of Route 30 in York in December, just a few days before Christmas. We went back for my car the next morning and low and behold my car was gone. So, we called the police and they told us it was parked on private property and had been towed. They said we needed to call Intown Motors and they would help get my car back. So we do this, they tell us they are only open from Noon to 3 pm and it would cost us $175 cash or credit card. If we could not pick it up that day it would cost an additional $25 per day until it was picked up. There was no negotiating with these people. It was what it was and that all they could do.
This seems to be nothing but a mere money making scheme. They (mall owners) posted signs, on the edge of the parking lot at this particular strip mall. It's literally at the entrances, right where you can not see them. Take a look from inside the lot. If you try to look from Route 30 you'll just get yourself hurt by slowing down to read all the Fine print. Oh, and Intown Motors starts patrolling 1 hour after the business' close.
Crazy I tell ya! And Intown Motors is getting rich off this!
One day, while my wife's car was in the auto body repair shop, we decided to share the rental car given her during the repair. I dropped her off at her work, went on to mine, and parked in the same lot I always park in. While I was out on the road in a company vehicle, someone noticed an intruder...a strange vehicle parked in "our" lot...one that nobody recognized.
Our company is also patrolled by, and parking regulations enforced by Intown Motors, who came at the drop of a hat to remove the trespasser.
I returned back to the shop not ten minutes after Intown hauled our rental car away.
I, along with one of the owners of the company I work for, who incidently, hired Intown Motors, then went to the Intown Motor's shop to get my car back.
"$240.00", the man said. My boss said, "but he is one of my employees and has a complete right to park in that lot."
We were told by the guy at the shop that it's out of his hands and that the price IS the price...$240.00.
It seems too that the pricing they use is rather arbitrary, since when asked, the guy told us that they don't have a price sheet that they go by.
Being the only game in town, it's clear that Intown has a kind of strong-hold on the public at large and can charge whatever they want to.
The sad reality is that they are only doing a job that our local retailers and business owners hired them to do...or are they?
I wonder if our business owners know the extent that these predators are going to to snatch up the vehicles that they get. I say it borders on illegal. If nothing else, it's distateful and lacks moral dignity to operate a business in that way.
Hi. I'm the "woman" in Mike's story today about Ms. Meckley, and it WAS absolutely rediculous. I am a caseworker, who was at the County Assistance Office last Monday helping one of my consumers in an emergency, and the only parking I could find was in this lot, and the signs quote a law from 1972, are sparsely and ambiguously placed, and say "Parking for York Health only". I checked with the businesses in that lot right after I parked, and called 411, and found that York Health has not existed on that street for years, and so thought the signs were old. Lo and behold, they are a trap. (By the way, I asked Ms. Meckley if she would like a ride w/me and another caseworker before I took off, and she politely said "No, I will wait for my neighbor". She's very sweet, and In-Town Motors heard it from ME when I told them there was a 70-something woman with a heart condition sitting in the Save-a-Lot parking lot, and they stared at me stone cold and would not take my pleas to pick her up. I screamed at them, then paid the robbers. It is a HORRIBLE SHAME that the York City Police told me there is NOTHING they can do about this situation. The signs are for a BUSINESS THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN YORK. That in itself should be ILLEGAL. It is another HORRIBLE SHAME that the police, when I called, said there was nothing they could do, even when I told them I was stranded there with an older woman with a HEART CONDITION. SHAME!!!!
Last August, my girlfriends and I went to Baltimore for dinner. We also parked at Manchester Crossroads - in the top corner by Ritas. I had parked here before, for bus trips with no problems. Anyhow, we returned to find two of the cars gone, one on the tow truck, and another ready to be pulled up on the tow truck. Everyone was charged to get their cars back. We were trying to be safe, knowing we were going to have a few drinks, and this is what happened. Again, I didn't see any signs from where I parked. I had entered the shopping center from Sus Trail. I think the businesses must get their cut from Inntown, or they would not let this go on.
Let me add a few things the wife forgot, after the car was towed we later found that it had been opened by a locksmith so they could place a CLUB on it,since it was dropped in a open field behind there property,no fencing no lights no protection of any kind except to make sure you couldn't steal your car back. And best part is they don't even remove the club they hand you the keys and then make you return the club and the keys.
Recently, I made an honest mistake and parked in a lot that was considered off limits. I did not see the sign which stated this because of two large SUVs which blocked the sign. After a school field trip at the Strand, I returned to find my car had been towed. I called the phone number and found the employee at Intown Motors to be rude. In my mind, I knew I had made a mistake and that I was responsible to pay the fee. I remained very calm. Unlike the other accounts shared by your readers, I did not swear and was not in an outrage. I was not prepared however for the disrespectful, harsh manners of the employees at Intown Motors. When I arrived at the filthy office, there were two gray cats walking inside the small area. When I expressed my extreme allergies and fear of cats, the man sitting at the desk with his feet propped up, replied, "Lady the cats are inside and they are staying." Two of the men laughed, thinking it was funny that one cat jumped from the desk in front of me and the other went between my legs! I refused to continue the transacation inside due to the cats. I told the man he would have to conduct business with me outside. I went outside and paid him using the hood of a parked car as the desk! He demanded cash for payment. Who carries 145.00 in cash when visiting Downtown York? Again, I knew that I had made a mistake - a stupid one and I was willing to pay even though it was a financial burden on my family. But the lack of respect was outrageous! I can honestly say I have never been treated so poorly in any prior business transaction in my whole life! . When I returned home, I immediately called my credit card company to have my number changed. I did not trust those shady characters who now had my credit card number! Thank you for allowing me to share this experience. I hope that more people will speak out and put this company out of business.
I work at the "Yorktown Mall," as it is so gloriously called. First, let me say that it is no longer home to Sav-a-Lot -- they moved to Prospect St. a few months ago. Second, I cannot begin to tell you of all the times I've had to fight with InTown Motors. The most recent incident was unbelievable...
MetEd was doing some work at Chestnut and Queen. Their flagmen crew couldn't legally park anywhere on the streets, so they parked their truck in the lot, at the spot closest to that intersection. A few minutes later, the truck is being picked up by the tow truck. I received a call from the flagging company telling me what was going on and asking me to help out...so I went out to the parking lot. The driver was nothing but rude to me. I was there with the flagger and the MetEd supervisor, and he was trying to make some calls to get the truck released. I called the property manager (she lives in NJ, but the owners are in CA), and she called InTown to have the truck released. I stayed in the lot until it was resolved. On my way back into the building, a gentlemen from InTown called my cell phone to ask me why I was interfering with their job, because "these people" obviously shouldn't have parked there. Pardon me, but a utility crew, who happens to supply electricity for everyone in York, INCLUDING IN TOWN MOTORS, can't park somewhere because there is no legal room on the street? Gee, I guess we should just put up a gate with a fence and give everyone a code to park in the lot -- and let us buzz in anyone else that we deem "worthy" of parking there.
And, by the way...I know Toby Johnston's (the owner of InTown) parents. They are the nicest people...too bad he doesn't take after them.
intown motors are nothing but low life thieves..they will get the wrong car someday and meet up with teh wrong person then they mite think a little about steeling peoples cars
