About this blog
Mike Argento, a York native and graduate of York Suburban Area High School and Penn State, first came to the York Daily Record in 1983. He even had gray hair back then. After stints covering everything from cops to city hall to state government to the environment, he began writing a column for the paper, three times a week, in 1989. His column can be about anything and so is his blog, which encompasses life in York County and beyond. And, for the record, as he told his wife the other night, he wishes people would stop asking him, 'What's wrong with you?' He really doesn't know.

Neil Young on bailouts
Neil Young rocks the bailout. The chorus: “There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you. “It’s for all those creeps hiding what they do. “There’s a bailout coming but it’s not for you. “Bailout coming but it’s not for … Continue reading

Paul Krugman: Ecomonic Cassandra
Throughout our economic crisis, Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has been nailing it. His analysis and predictions have been spot-on, but his dismal view of how this crisis will play out has turned off a … Continue reading

RIP, Snooks Eaglin
One of this country’s musical treasures passed away Tuesday. Snooks Eaglin was a pioneering guitar player, a mainstay of the New Orleans R&B scene and a master of funk. He died on his mother’s birthday after a battle with prostate … Continue reading
Charging admission to jail
It sounds crazy, but Philadelphia may be exploring an idea that could help York County: Charging admission to the prison. Think about it. York County needs to raise money to expand the prison. The federal government is balking at guaranteeing … Continue reading

A little quiz
Which country, in recent years, has not repealed regulations that keep banks from making poor investments and taking wild risks? And, which nation has not had a single bank failure during this worldwide banking crisis? The answer is here.
Arlen gets it
Often, our own U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., gets criticized for his moderate stances, irritating those on the left and the right with his willingness to try to get something done. He has come out in favor of the stimulus … Continue reading

Yes, it is a spending bill. That’s the point.
Republican opposition to the stimulus plan has reached the point of idiocy. Don’t take my word for it. Here is an excellent analysis by Washington Post business columnist Steven Pearlstein. Pearlstein writes: “Actually, what’s striking is that supposedly intelligent people … Continue reading
