About this blog
Mike Argento, a York native and graduate of York Suburban Area High School and Penn State, first came to the York Daily Record in 1983. He even had gray hair back then. After stints covering everything from cops to city hall to state government to the environment, he began writing a column for the paper, three times a week, in 1989. His column can be about anything and so is his blog, which encompasses life in York County and beyond. And, for the record, as he told his wife the other night, he wishes people would stop asking him, 'What's wrong with you?' He really doesn't know.

Monetary policy and you
Another good one from New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman. Today he’s writing about China’s monetary policy. I know, monetary policy is the Ambien of political and economic issues. What it has to do with anything … Continue reading

Big news on the snack food front
York County is the snack food capital of the world. OK, maybe not the world, but at least in central Pennsylvania. The big news was the acquisition of Utz by Snyder’s of Hanover, forming a new snack food giant. Utz, … Continue reading

Sounds about right
Great story today about everybody’s favorite flim-flam artist Bernie Madoff. If you’ve been wondering what happened to all of the money Madoff scammed from his “investors,” wonder no more. AFP reports: “NEW YORK — Convicted Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff … Continue reading

Another day, another championship
National League champs! Your Philadelphia Phillies! What a fun team to watch. Ryan Howard was named MVP of the series, but you could have picked Rollins or Werth or Ruiz or Lee for that award. (To be fair, though, Howard … Continue reading

This could get ugly
This morning, on ESPN’s Mike and Mike show, the hosts were discussing the confluence of events that could occur in Philadelphia on Nov. 1. At 1 p.m., the Eagles play the Giants at the Linc. At 8 p.m., it could … Continue reading

So what’s the problem…
A headline in the Washington Post says it: “Poll: Most Americans support public option.” So why doesn’t Congress support it? Could it be that unlike Congress, regular working people who have had been screwed over by insurance companies don’t receive … Continue reading

Sounds about right.
It doesn’t matter that perhaps some innocent people have been put to death. It doesn’t matter that in many death penalty cases, defendants don’t have adequate legal representation. It doesn’t matter that the death penalty raises some sticky ethical and … Continue reading

You gotta love it!
Post-season baseball, that is. Two games Monday went down to the final at-bat. The Angels got themselves back into the series against the Yankees in an extra-inning thriller and the Phillies are one win away from defending their world championship … Continue reading

Balloon boy, redux
So now, the authorities are thinking about charging the Balloon Boy’s parents with, I don’t know, criminal stupidity in the first degree. The family’s lawyer was on the morning news shows today, saying how the family didn’t want this entire … Continue reading

Philadelphia fever! Catch it!
And get sick. Not the Phillies. Spanked the Dodgers last night, a complete beat down, 11-0. Carlos Ruiz is on fire. Ryan Howard is hitting. Victorino is being Victorino. And then, there are the Eagles. They have this kind of … Continue reading
